I picked the two SOC's, I think an 8 year old would like the large figures with swords and stuff and like the bright colors on Baikanfu. They may be a little fiddly with all the small parts but the main toy is pretty sturdy especially Dancouga mine has taken a few shelf dives and nothing broke.

I also picked the Dancouga and Baikanfu. I never liked the Transformers concept, so those are out. Without knowing what they were, the SRCs would be like just like two space knights and an enemy (the GGG) action figures, cool but sort of irrelevant. The VF1A would've fallen in the same category as the Transformers, so that one is also out.
But the two SOCs would've been great! One is a robot made up of three awesome robot tanks and one space fighter, and the other is a two layer armored suit controled by a "human" pilot! Plus, they are big, they are metal, and the have big swords!!!

If I were 8 right now, I'd probably go for the Better-looking most attractive robot as I'm looking at them on the shelf... I'll have to see the Dancouga SOC again, but I picked him. I also picked the GGG and 'Teisen SRCs, again for the attraction.
At that age, robot toys had always Wowed me with their sculpts and vibrant colors. I had no concept of them with the perspective that I have Now as a collector... all I knew was that I wanted to have such cool toys in my hands. Through elementary and highschool, after school walking home, I'd stop at Hobby Tree on Grand Concourse Blvd (in the Bronx, Fordham Rd) and gaze at the Shogun Warriors jumbos and little die-cast chogokins in the window, and I was always fascinated with their designs and colors, as well as their box arts.

I didn't put Mazinger or Daiku etc. because this is going to be a Christmas present, and I'm trying to go for the most bang for buck so to speak. I know Mazinger was the jumping off point for many of us, including myself actually, but you have to think if you were 8 years old now. I would think that most any kid would likely take a SOC Dancouga over a SOC Mazinger?

Yes they would, or a Baikanfu too. But, wait... why would you give an 8 year old an SOC, much less Dancouga or Baikanfu? Would he(she?) be better off with a regular Transformer DX toy instead? 8 year olds are not the most careful people... }D

Personally SOC Dancouga is a no-brainer for an 8-year-old me. Giant combiner made up of animals that has big ass cannons on its jet pack? Hell yes!

I picked Dancouga and giant Starscream/Skywarp. Although my personal preference as AN ADULT would be Dancouga & Baikanfu, I'm thinking the most important thing to an 8 yr. old would be guns, size & ruggedness.
Baikanfu, although very cool, might be a little too much fuss & fragileness for an eight yr. old.
Dancouga is HUGE with big guns & the two transformers have simple transformations & good sized weapons. Plus you can fly them around the room. Pewpewpew!!!!!!

I only chose one cause I didnt know, but I chose Dancouga. I dont have one measly Dancouga figure but I know I would pick this as kid. Although I would be very curious about Bainkanfu.
As a kid, I had to choose between Daltanias and Gardian so that is what I base my above choices on due to certain similarities

SOC Dancouga and Starscream no doubt. When I was kid I saw Dancouga at a store and so wanted him. What I got instead was an Insecticon . Funny thing is I have yet to buy the SOC Dancouga.
