Before this poll I was actually leaning toward Baikanfu, but in sheer awesomeness Dancouga would be the one to immediately capture the imagination. I'm still sort of debating though. In playability I sort of think that Dancouga might have a bigger pay off? But then how much more (if any) playability does Baikanfu really have over Dancouga? And the combined form of Dancouga is almost unbeatable, at least visually. Hmm..
I was also originally putting a lot of stock in the 3 SRC idea, but I've realized that it's like comparing a Godaikin to having 3 Shogun warriors, and which would I have rather had? I still remember the one Godaikin Combattler sitting in the Grand Central toy department and thinking it was the ultimate of all toys. What did I get for Christmas? A Shogun Mazinger, Reideen, and Bullmark Machine Blaster. They were cool, but needless to say, they didn't compare to what that Combattler would have been..

Personally I would have a giant, heavy robot than 3 mid-sized ones. When I was kid I would bargain with my parents to chalk up my toy karma; if they wanted to buy me a small transformer, I asked, "how many small Transformers will it take to get the big one?". ;D

From my experience as a father of an 8 year old. SOCs are costly and you can never be so sure there won't be a sad puppy face and a.. "Daddy would super glue fix it"... I know, I know you told me to enjoy it but to be careful..." As much as me and my son enjoy watching anime from my childhood, he has his own list of super robots he likes best. #1 - Mazinger (already got him the SRC one for his name day last April. # 2 - Jeeg (got him the Takara / Magnemo 1990's repro for his birthday this May together with a pair of rollerblades). Now this is a long story as I originally got him a Toynami 25th annyversary Voltron metallic finish which was to be a surprise, and hey! costly YES! but heavy duty plastic, how much damage could he do to it? and not as costly as SOC Dancouga. #3 - Great Mazinger (he will be getting the SRC one for child's day on June 1st - I already bought it And the list goes, including Getter, Mazinkaiser, Gakeen... So, probably for the next holiday: Getter 1 from the Yamato Hero Collection (which I already bought and I have one myself on my showcase). Now it's true that I may sound stingy, but honestly even as a kid I treated my toys as museum items (probably why I became a collector) and it will really break my heart to see an expensive super dooper collectible: scratched, chipped or broken. So you can imagine to my son's questions: "Daddy would I ever get a...: Daltanious ? A: "No, unless they manufacture a version for kids, currently only adult collector ones exist, sorry." And same went for Albegas and Gakeen

Forgot to mention, I voted for Transformers. My son really likes them even tough he has wished / asked only for an Optimus and a Bumblebee so far; so couple of years a go I got him the Transformers Movie Optimus and as an end of school year gift (this year) I got him a G1 Encore Bumblebee.

If I were eight? Dancouga and Baikanfu, definitely, due to size and their huge swords. No question. Shiny chrome (I'm like a magpie. Give me that delicious chrome) and big robots are a major win.
... If I weren't eight?
Baikanfu and the SRC trio. Baikanfu is probably one of my favorite large SOCs. He's a great design, and I looooooooove the solidity and feel of the SRC's despite their size.

This kid is pretty good with his toys and is a true robot fan (completely on his own). I know Baikanfu would hold up fine with its solid build. Dancouga I think would be ok except for maybe the head transformation. That's the only part of Dancouga I can think of that might be a little bit fragile. I'll have to think about that one. Just for solidity alone I might end up choosing Baikanfu.

Hmmm lets see if I were 8 ? hmm yeah there's nothing better than gurren lagann this robot is ideal for this category especially the one that got size of the galaxy or bigger I forget it name, as for Dancougar It seems to me a bit complex I prefer to leave it after I become 15 years old

I agree with the overall RJ consensus that Baikanfu and Dancouga would be the best If I were 8 years old. The feel of a large hefty diecast metal robot toy and to be able to break them down into smaller ones to play with would be awesome if I were still 8 (still awesome now! ^_^). Especially since Dancouga could also transform into cool animals of an eagle, big cats, and elephant/mammoth like creature is soooo cool! ;D
my 2 cents! ~B

SOC Dancouga and Bandai Super Valkyrie (Although I would prefer a Roy Fokker version compared to Hikaru's VF-01A).
The reason? Size! For my 8 year old mind, the bigger the better. Secondly, transforming robots are cool! Thirdly, transforming, combining robots are even cooler (specially if they transform into animal modes - not to mention that 3/4 of Dancouga's components are triple changers)!

I remember back when I was 8, 1987, the cool toy at the time was the Nintendo. Toys were all cast aside when I got that game machine. But of the toys that I have, I've always liked combiners. That old Matchbox voltron and the Godaikin voltron was what I wished for. Had a cousin that had one and another kids from my childhood that have one. Was always envious of them. But these toys that I wanted was from before I got a Nintendo. Once video games came along, I didn't buy another toy till I turn 18. And it was characters from video games that got me interested in collecting toys.
So with that mindset, if I could have anyone from the list, it would most like be the Dancougar or the Baikanfu. It is kinda weird to see any kids past the age of five that still wants toys. I have a bunch of cousins that have kids and almost everyone of them carries around a nintendo ds. I don't remember seeing a single one that has a toy chest.

In light of that and speaking as the father of an 8 year old boy who is pretty careful with his stuff, no SOC will hold up against any 8 year old boy....unless he intents to just occasionally transform it and leave it on the display shelf 90% of the time. (then he probably doesn't like it) I can guarantee that just one "battle" will lead to stuff breaking off....give it a couple of day and you'll find that at least a few accessories will be missing. To an 8 year old all SOCs are fragile. My son goes through his Mattel DC universe action figures like water, those that don't break are well loved, loose and all scoffed up (trophies of battles)...its really unavoidable.....pretty much the way we were when we were kids playing with our Godaikins. Let's face it SOCs or most all of our toys weren't meant to be played with....this is the price we pay for their high quality of detail and anime accuracy. Though if you still have your heart set on giving him an SOC perhaps a small non-combiner would be more durable T28 maybe? or GX-45 ? ******************** You know what I was thinking, as an alternative to a high end SOC you could get him a KO Taiwan Godaikin or a modern bandai power ranger combining mecha these will likely set you back a lot less and will probably have more mileage to him and at the same time foster his love for super robots.

My 5 years old son loves the classic Jeeg from Takara, it's probably his favority toy. I also gave him as a present a GX-03 and he really likes to combine it too. From the list only I'd say Baikanfu: when I was a kid I had and loved Gordian from Popy, Baikanfu is more or less the same

I know that this is quite old, none the less might as well mention that you can never be too sure that Taiwan's KO die-cast toys are in compliance with CPSC like the Taiwan miniature Voltron and Godaikin from the early eighties -which were original licensed-, I mean KOs might not be suitable for kids due to lead paint poisoning and stuff.
