Anyone see this show last night on SyFy Channel? They come into collector's homes and try to help them get their collections under control. I watched it and have some mixed feelings. Anyone see this before I chime in?

I've seen the show you're referring to zman...and quite frankly it feels so fake and set-up. The acting is horrible.

I've seen that show. The dude is basically a flipper. Buys stuff for dirt cheap (I would have been insulted at most of his offers and badgering) and immediately turns it around for a profit. This show has a different focus. If you missed it, its airing online: www.syfy.com/videos/Collection%20Intervention/vid:19028820

Its on again next Tuesday. They've been pimping the hell out of it on that channel, so it might do OK. There are some good things coming up. From the intro montage, I saw one collection with the new Jumbo Dairugger, but next to it, was a Tryder Jumbo Machinder!! I spotted some Gundams and other toys too in the various scenes.

I saw the preview/promo, but not the show yet. In print, it "seems" to be a good concept, with helping folks do a desirable, and welcome job of presenting what they have, while weeding out the "filler" that they may have enjoyed getting somewhat, but is basically a deadweight to the rest of life. I can appreciate this, though of course, many of us sometimes tend too much to want to ignore the issues collecting can cause if not balanced.
I'll have to watch some eps. Just like American Pickers, etc, it's ALWAYS fun to see what stashes other people have squirreled away all over the world, and what their story is.
I'm looking forward to showcasing/displaying commentary from some pros. I enjoy those collections that have the space and $$ budgeted to not just be piles of stuff, but be out in eye catching, accessible displays.
I like the quote early on: " The Goal, is to live in your house, with your beautiful collection, but for there to be room for it to grow in the right way."
She's dead on common sense early on, with the sum up of the Star Wars couple's collection, that they have aquired some GREAT pieces, especially lots of classic cool vintage, but there's so much modern, common, easily available stuff cluttering, that you don't need to have. Just like any other line like our robots and kaiju, focus on the good stuff first, and you know you'll be happier in the long run. Easily said, hard to be disiplined to do.

I watch (and set my DVR) both shows. Although Jumbo Machinders and Chogokins are the focus of my collecting, I respect all types of collections and enjoy seeing vintage toys. I would say that Collection Intervention is a better show than Toy Hunter, but it's comparing apples to oranges. What both shows provide is a much needed look into the great & sometimes addictive world of collecting vintage toys. It's about damn time we got noticed!

The Toy Hunter dude bought the US versions of the Medicom Battle of the Planets Mark and Jason in last night's episode. He bought them for $75 for the pair and thought he could sell them for $150. He put them in a toy auction, but they did not show those sell. Since he lost on a few other auctions (and seeing how old the crowd was), I assume he lost on these too. On ebay, they sell for about $50 each. I think I bought mine for about $15 each at a show a number of years back.

As far as the Toy Hunter goes, he makes it clear he intends to turn a profit on the toys, so his low-balling is part of the game. He even offers to broker deals for people instead of outright buying a piece. However, with eBay, etc. I don't understand why anyone would bother with a dealer when they can sell the stuff themselves. Haven't seen the other show. I fear it might hit too close to home.

Anyone notice Brian Flynn in the first ep of CI? Pretty cool to see someone you know on the screen.

I think the atmosphere with that collector was like walking on eggshells. She did not want to part with anything, and she had some emotional issues tied to the collection. The small figures was probably the only thing that was up for discussion at that point, and even then, she had an issue even giving up one of the figures. I feel strongly about each piece in my collection, but I don't have much issue parting with the fringe stuff. I'll bet she had a mint carded version of every one of the loose figures in that scene. I think she just has some internal issues she needs to work through. It's just stuff!
Had to have been weird for Brian.

I only see these shows doing further damage to those of us that swap, trade, and yard sale. Ebay has done enough already. I live in rural northern California, and now all of the old school swap meets, garage and yard sale people state, " well you can find this on Ebay for X-amount," to justify their jacked up prices. Come on, its a frackin swap meet or a yard sale! It was just to you junk before. Heck half the time they tell me they have good toys (Gi Joes, Star Wars, Transformers and robots) but are putting them on Ebay and won't even offer a look unless I have a few $100s hanging out of my wallet. Now the Toy Pimper (Hunter) will further put the best Swap and yard sale toys out of reach too! It will just make it worse for the poor-Joe collector like myself from finding a great treasure for a great price. Might as well buy on Ebay with my hands attached to my ankles!
