I will be going to Tokyo soon and need help with finding places to shop for toys. Any help is appreciated. I only have a day or so for toy shopping. I have previously been to Nakano and loved it. If there are any other places like it please let me know.
I'm mostly into modern stuff but may also be looking for a few vintage pieces.

Best choice is definitly Nakano Madarake special stores in the street-maul close to the train station www.mandarake.co.jp/en/shop/nkn.htmlYou will find lots of stuffs for collectors. Akihabara Mandaraka is pretty huge : www.mandarake.co.jp/en/shop/cmp.htmlFor brand news toys, I don't know so much, try some japanese toys'r us or different stores sighted in Akihabara or Ueno...

Thanks guys for the input. I do remember the mandrake store in Nakano. I bought GX-01B there for 2000 yen back in 2008. I've heard that prices there aren't competitive as before. I hope I still find some good deals there.
Does anywhere else have toy stores concentrated within walking distance? I only have a day or so and can't really afford going to one area for just one store. any input is welcomed!!
I have heard of that Tokyo underground book. Is it any good? Are the info recent? I hesitate to spend money on it just because toy stores tend to high turnover rates.

Was just in Tokyo late November, 2012. Picked up the 2nd Ed Tokyo Underground book and I have some address finding skills already imho. I thought the book was helpful to a point. Maybe a bit tough for a first time visitor. Mainly I had trouble figuring out which places I just wasn't finding and which are no longer there. Anyway I finally got to Jyarinco which was worth the trip though the first time I went they were closed - so it was really 2 trips since as often said, there isn't too much else though I guess Akihabara isn't that long a ride away. Finally found Godzilla-ya which is often mentioned to be above the bar. Maybe it was but now it's a few doors West and up a flight steps. Wanted to go to Yamashiroya (not in the Tokyo Underground book) but didn't find the time. Has anyone mentioned Hobby Off, the Book Off specialty shop in the new part Akihabara?

technick - Do you know, relative to the train station, where the new part of Aki is located? Is it east of the train station looking from the outside in?

I was there around thanksgiving too. Only spent one day in Nakano and Akihabara combined. Was there with family so couldn't cover much ground. I only had an old guidebook from HK but was able to find in Akihabara yellow submarine, animate, kotobukiya, along with some other places whose names I don't remember. Is there a "new" Akihabara? What's there? Got a GX-01X plus some CDs in mandrake in Nakano. Got some N scale stuff in Akihabara. The rest are from Hk. Here was my haul, total damage around $250.

Not bad considering you only had one day locidm. I find myself considering throwing away some of the clothes I bring on my trip since it gets in the way of fitting more stuff in my suit case.
