It is my 13th year collecting SOC. And I now just came to realize that I appreciate the larger/more complex SOCs than the smaller ones. Despite being a huge Mazinger Z fan, I find myself more drawn to the bigger combiners. How about you guys, which one do you prefer?

I'm definitely with you. I prefer the larger/more complex SOC's. When I'm spending over $200+ on a robot, I expect it to have some good size to it. I'm also a fan of combiners. I really wish SOC Voltes V would be redone again. I loved everything about that figure except how tall it was. I wish it was as tall as the more recent SOC's like God Sigma, Daltanious, etc.

My guess is that I enjoy being able to fiddle around with the figure without having parts scratch, break, or fall off. While combiners can be pretty awesoke figures, I still prefer the basic ones that are designed to hold together well. Also, in my case, I'm just too much of a early classic Super Robot fan. ;D

I like the small SOCs for the nostalgia. But, I also like the bigger SOCs for their striking appearance. The combiners are nice, I'd probably just go for Raideen and King Joe; and perhaps even Dairugger XV and Golion (if they would ever get the SOC treatment), but that's the end of my line. I'm sticking with the classic super robots, mostly the Mazingers.

To me, SOC is about lot of diecast, large size and 70s/80s Japanese robots. Doesn't have to be complex cause it is all depends on the robot design.

That is how I feel as well. Unfortunately, these days the term "Chogokin" is used on anything, even if the figure is 99.9% plastic. The saddest part is that most people are fine with that. }|

Yep. My GX-01R is in Puerto Rico (I shoulda held it with me here at home). My GX-02R is here with me. Your custom painted GX-45 Shin Maz is also here with me, will snap and post pics of it tonight after I get home from work. I haven't changed the paint-job, it's still all white/red, don't wanna damage the artwork. If I make a resin copy of it I'll modify the resin copy to look like the Toei version Mazinger. zozo-mag I like the small SOCs for the nostalgia. TMZ. We're seeing "eye to eye" on that one..... In fact, I get mad when I see the word gokin and the toy is over 90% plastic... I get mad when they list material as having diecast when in fact all the diecast in the toy are screws and tinny part of spin..."Hey we have diecast in this toy! Please all the gokin lovers, buy this toy!." Yes I'm talking to you Takara, and also in smaller scale, Bandai! BTW, I also like smaller basic SOC due to their price and gokin content....however, I eagerly wait for a good price opportunity to pounce on my very first SOC combiner. Due to my advance age, I'm now in my experimental stage in gokin collecting hobby...

Yes, I also prefer the smaller more gokin goodness containing figures. But a lot of combiners are very cool too, even if they only are 30% or less in diecast.

If both the big & small SOCs are very sturdy and playable, then I prefer big over small. Unfortunately, in reality, construction and weight doesn't always allow such preference. So in the end, some of the smaller SOCs still retains its charm, even though it came with less complexity and gimmicks. So in the end, things kind of evens out and I like both big & small for different reasons.

Yeah, I agree about the lack of die-cast in most of the larger SOCs. I remember buying an Optimus Prime at target for less than $50 and telling myself... Wow, this has more die-cast than most of my SOCs that are over $100, $200 and now, $300. Is it mass production that makes some die-cast toys a lot cheaper?
Another thing that I don't like about some of my larger SOCs is that parts come off too easily. I was playing with my GX-53 today and the wing component part kept falling apart. And one of its fists popped off and I now can't put it back. Arghhh... Super annoying. I am also not crazy about the GX-51 because the feet plates keep popping off as well. And don't even get me going about Ideon, that guy can hardly stand up.
Overall though, I am more drawn to the bigger guys. I got the GX-60 for Christmas and I can't stop playing with that robot. It's so sturdy, nothing comes loose.
Gunbuster and Dancouga are my two favorite big SOCs... Heck, they are my two favorite SOCs off all time... So far...

I'm probably about to get schmacked for using the term "gokin" loosely right now........
......in my collection, probably the only legitimate gokins I have are a die-cast Toynami Voltron (used, some parts will be repared) and a larger Trendmasters Voltron (missing a green lion head). Aside from my GX-01R/02R Mazingers, these two Voltrons pack lotsa weight, probably about 90% die-cast.
Hey, if I can crack a skull with it... it's a Gokin! ;D

Seriously, Bandai should change the "Soul of Chogokin" name to "Soul of Super Robot", since they don't put that much "chogokin" in these figures anymore. }|

This is the GX-45 Shin Mazinger which Baron Weirwolf custom-painted a while back (sometime last year or the previous year?)..... ...I love the Shin Mazinger series for what it was, but I felt kinda mixed about the robot re-make. I guess Ken Ishikawa just drew Mazinger up in his own style, apart from the Toei version of Mazinger. Then along came the SOC GX-45 by Bandai... ...something about Shin Mazinger's color scheme (all black and white), and that extrusion below his chest made me squeamish, but then it's also a rendition of Mazinger-Z from his manga origins with a contemporary touch-up. After a while I grew to like Shin Maz. To my surprise, Baron Weirwolf sent me a Gaiking poster, which I still have but still haven't framed it because I haven't found a cool frame for it yet (I'm also about to repaint my room next week)....... when the poster arrived there was something unusual about its arrival.... "packed in a box?" ...Okay, I guess ya gotta protect a nice poster by any means necessary. "damn, this box is Heavy!" ...okay, something's weird about this. ...I opened the box, and unpacked the Gaiking poster. Awesomeness! ...then I unpacked whatever the heavy object was inside, it was wrapped in bubble-plastic... lo and behold, it was Baron Weirwolf's custom-painted SOC GX-45 with its Jet Scrander! I was blown away speechless, I can't thank Baron enough for this kind gesture. And, that is also why I never altered the paint-job on this specimen. I may have to tighten a few loose joints to keep this token from flopping around. But other than that, it will stay as is, because it is also an artwork from our fellow member Baron Weirwolf. zozo-mag

Bigger ones just because they resemble Godaikins and because they better stand eye to eye with Transformer Masterpieces and 3rd party Transformer combiners
