I am halfway through the 2nd season of Grendizer and Im watching it in Italian. I have no formal training in Italian but its close to my second language wich is Portuges so I undertand about 95% of what is being said.
Here is my question.. Is the Koji Kabuto in Grendizer the exact same Koji from Mazinger Z or is he a "re-boot" or a"parallel universe" Koji? The reason I ask this is because so far, he never once has mentioned anything about being the ex-pilot of Mazinger as far as I can tell. He is also in the Doulbe Spazer and has never said how the Double Spazer compares to Mazinger in terms of power or anything. If it was the same Koji, I would think that he would have asked Dr, Brockton to make him another Mazinger just based on his past credibility.

I believe Grendizer was before Mazinger Z.......in the first episode of Mazinger Z, I think they mention that Koji is off at space cadet school ? Although in the New years episode of Grendizer, Boss Borat shows up, to suprise kOJI ?? Ok I guess I didnt really help you.....Wait lets just call Go Nagi.........

In the episode where Brockton tries to explain why he put a spy sattellite in orbit, the Alien that was disquised as the Swiss scientist at the big convention said something about Koji that translates to basicaly "Your ally from the Proton Base.." So I guess this is happening AFTER Mazinger Z..

Grendizer is after Mazinger and Great Mazinger, Koji was a high school kid in Mazinger who later went off to NASA which is where he learned to make the TFO before he joins Duke in his fight. This Koji is the same Koji from Mazinger Z and who later showed up in Great Mazinger. These three series are in continuity, everything after like Mazinkaiser is a alternate continuity.
lexcars, there are no Super Robot series before Mazinger except Tetsujin and Astroganga which are not typical Super Robot shows where there is a cockpit and a pilot for the robot, Mazinger started that trend which is why it's called the grandfather of the typical Super Robot genre.

Or at least given Fleed some of his advice on robot combat. he never even mentions it so far.

There is a very short flashback of Mazinger, still pictures style, in the first scene of the first episode.
The most common answer to the reason behind the absence of the Mazingers is simply that Go Nagai just didn't want to make another Mazinger series at that time. Even Koji was a compromise to please Toei. In-story, there's no real explanation as to why he just doesn't grab a Mazinger (which were still in working order) to help other than that he just doesn't feel like it, as far as I remember.

I think they were trying to distance Grendizer from Mazinger, besides a flashback to Koji fighting in Mazinger in the first episode and then Boss showing up later the Mazinger Z connection isn't mentioned much. I guess they wanted to focus on Duke and Grendizer while Koji was a supporting character. Koji was mainly used to draw interest to Grendizer which really has zero connection to the Mazingers, after that it stayed focused on Grendizer and it's story.

Yep. That's the very same Koji. he had already returned to Japan from NASA, and became a member of the Grendizer team. In the OAV movie "Great Mazinger tai Grendizer" Koji got kidnapped by the Vegans and was interrogated. They somehow brainwashed him into identifying himself and his role as member of the Grendizer team... ...it was that moment when he described his past as the former Mazinger-Z pilot; meanwhile there were some flashback scenes of him piloting Mazinger. He also disclosed some details about Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger. Remember, he was brainwashed. He fought and resisted, but was finally taken against his own will. The Vegans were trying to figure out a way to defeat Grendizer, when they learned that Koji was the pilot for the robot Mazinger-Z. During that time both Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger were retired as display artifacts inside a Robot Museum. Of the those two robots, the Vegans chose Great Mazinger which appeared to be more powerful than Mazinger-Z (obviously). Then they proceeded to invade the museum and hijack Great Mazinger. Later on Koji escapes from the Vegan ship and manages to reclaim Great Mazinger, piloting it, to team up with Grendizer and defeat the Vegans. This movie was the only time I've known Koji to pilot Great Mazinger; so now we can also safely acknowledge that Koji has indeed piloted all three Mazinger robots. But that's another topic for another day. zozo-mag Grendizer is after Mazinger and Great Mazinger, Koji was a high school kid in Mazinger who later went off to NASA which is where he learned to make the TFO before he joins Duke in his fight. To everyone: you can get the Mazinger OAVs here... ca.isohunt.com/download/262542793/mazinger+vs+Grendizer+movie.torrentFirst, you need the uTorrent client program www.utorrent.com/downloads/complete/os/win/track/stable1) download and install the uTorrent client program. 2) go to the torrent url link shown above and download the torrent file... make sure to Open the file (NOT save it) and it will automatically open in uTorrent. 3) uTorrent will begin downloading the movie-pack file to a folder in your computer. Make sure you're aware of it's folder location. If you forget its location, right-click the torrent file inside uTorrent and click "Open Containing Folder..." Download speed varies depending on how many users are seeding and leeching it. Your download speed is proportionate to your upload speed, so be patient. This program will work best with high-speed internet. If you still have Dial-up... you need to go back to the Stone age and bang your head with a rock. ;D 4) wait for the entire download to be Completed BEFORE you open the movies in your mediaplayer. When finished downloading, be kind and leave the client open to seed the file so others can have at it as well. You don't need to seed it forever, just a few minutes to an hour will be okay. Also, make sure you have all your video codecs installed to watch the movies. If not, here is the codec pack you need to install... www.videohelp.com/download/klcodec970s.exeDO THIS BEFORE YOU START PACK-RATTIN' MOVIES! Good luck. zozo-mag ok that makes more sense....I knew that in mazinger z Koji was at space camp , and that later in Grendizer, Boss shows up, as a suprise at New years....I just wasnt sure of the time line..... where can I get the movie where koji is captured by the Vegans ??

@ Robot Lover/Fighter:
No problem. I haven't thoroughly checked that torrent, all the Mazinger OAVs are in it. I just hope it's not another HKdvdrip project like the HKdvdrip version of the Mazinger-Z series....... Because if that torrent is, I'll have to find the RAWs and do the English subtitling for them, translated from the Spanish subtitles.
As for the original Mazinger-Z version: The "Edición Fotoatómico" version is the most recent fansub release that is the largest fansub version in internet history. I translated the English subs for it last summer, and it is online now but the torrent for it is dying (I guess fans preferred to download direct from some host link I dunno where)... It knocks away any previous fansub version made in the past, believe me. I can't even download it because it's a massive compilation, I'll need a couple terabyte storage drives just for all 16 discs and their Extras.
I still have the beta for that version... I plan to release it as a DVD box set, in the old NTSC/PAL formats; one disc at a time; with less features, in original Jpn audio with the English subtitles... sometime later this year. I'll announce it when that time comes.

Here's my custom DVD extratorrent.com/torrent/2959284/MazingerZvsAnkoukuDaishogun.html------------------------- As for the relation between Grendizer and Mazinger, I'm trying to find the bridge between the two. I watched the final episode of the Great Mazinger series (RAW, un-subbed) last night but I couldn't understand some of what the narrator was saying at the end. He mentioned Koji going back to the U.S. but I don't know for what, perhaps it was the NASA thing, before returning to Japan in the Grendizer series. zozo-mag
