Hi all, I just decided to start collecting some SOC (I have some old vintage stuff). I played around with a God Sigma, went home and broke out my Sun Vulcan and thought "yeah I could buy more of these."
I put a list together of some figures I wanted and was hoping to get some input on what I should get. (In general I like box-shaped robots) So if you could choose 2:
GX-31 Voltes V (regular release) GX-32 Gold Lightan GX-32R Silver/Black Lightan GX-61 Daiohjah
Thank you

Thats a tough one. Lots of the SOCs and now even DX SOC are worth getting. But from your list, the 2 obvious choices for me will be the Voltes V and Daioja bots. IMO, combiners that combine into bigger bots looks more impressive & are jus way more fun to play with then others.

Out that list I would pick Voltes and Daioja easy. God Sigma as you know is a great piece, all the Go Nagai stuff is really good. GX-50 Combattler is awesome too. It would be best if you have a longer list of all the ones your interested in and we could give you better feedback.

Please do M.E. the favor and get Battle Fever... Out of all my SOCs, that's my VERY favorite. Tons of die cast and awesome articulation.
Also the Tetsujin 28, both. Hard to not like those. Lastly, GX 45 Shin..Amazing piece.

Best piece of advice I can give: follow your heart. I know it sounds cliche but, for me, always start with what made you fall in love with super robots. If its from your childhood, chances are, you'll find it in SOCs.

Second best piece of advise, don't spend more than you can really afford! These figures are getting very expensive every time!!!!

My advice? Go for your favorite first. Then move along from there
That is why I have an SOC Big-O!!!

Thank you for the great advice everyone. The reason I decided to get back into robot collecting was I started looking around and there are so many good pieces out there. I want to buy 3-4 pieces per year and spend some quality time with them hehe. Chen: Too many good choices and I had to be overly picky to get it down to a small list. I was a little scared of Voltes V because of some of the issues I was reading about in reviews regarding the legs. So I was thinking at the same price point its probably better to get a well built Daiojah than a Voltes V with some minor complaints. My initial collection starter purchases were GX-60 God Sigma, GX-50 CombattlerV and GX-50R Nambara Connection base. I had a list of like 10 other GXs I liked and narrowed it down. I wanted to leave some spare $$ so I can purchase the SOC Danguard Ace and maybe the Evolution Toys Atranger. @sadpanduh: I am trying to get a few pieces per year so next year I plan on getting some Mazinger pieces, I especially like the EnergerZ (look) and the Angels. If I just got one MZ piece is used GX-49 Shin Mazinger @ $60 a good price? @silverdronz: God Mars is defiantly on the list for a next year purchase. greengetterguy: At first, I didn't like the samurai-influenced style robots as much (especially the helmet style decorations) but now I think I just tend to focus on getting a quality robot with good design and construction. Thats why I was taking a look at Daioja because I was reading this forum and people seemed to be impressed with its build quality. I will add Battle Fever to the list for next year. Thank you again everyone for the great advice here (and on the previous threads).

If you get a Voltes and want a cheap deal/anime style colors get a regular one. If you want the nice Voltes in toy accurate colors and new accessories, spend the extra $$$ for the respect for volt in box second release.

Here would be my suggestions: Voltes V - It wouldn't be my top pick unless it is your must-have robot character. Voltes V is not that stable when combined (hip and ankle not very tight). It looks cool, and overall is quite good. Combination is simple. Good accessories. It also has a huge fan base on this site (our fellow Filipino collectors ), so you'll hear more good things about it here than others. But quality-wise, Voltes V is just middle tier among all the big combining SOCs. Gold Lightan - Awesome little gokin. Fun to mess with, but the plastic chrome parts oxidized very fast. I wipe mine everytime after I handle it, and it still messed up those plastic chrome after displayed it a few years. Again, if you plan to only have very few in your collection, it may not be a top pick, as it most likely won't last. Daiojah - Didn't get this one, so can't comment on. Other choices: Big O - You can still get it relatively cheap, and it is one of the best made non-transfomring/combining SOC. Accessories is very few (unless you pay big bucks for the add-ons), but the build quality and design is top notch. No joint issues, very stable and very playable. God Mars - Very nice execution, got 6 poseable robots. Proportion is as accurate as you can get. One of the best SOC combiner and its pretty much perfect transformation without part swap and still look perfect. One of the cleanest combiner. God Sigma - Similar to God Mars, God Sigma is just as good. Fewer robots to play, but very stable and massive. Slight grip on the shoulder ratchets not as strong as it should, so sometimes the shoulders collapse when you try to pose the arm, have to pop it back up into correct position sometimes. Has a bit of parts removal if you want the figure to look clean (legs & feet of the black robot). Daltanious - Simple and fun combination. Very solid. If the lion chest is your thing, this is a great buy. Slight issue with biceps not locking super tight and extent sometimes when you don't intend it to. Baikanfu - Very interesting combination (Russian doll gimmick), very stable with ratchet joints all over, even ratchet ankles! This figure won't topple even when you push it. One of my favorite. These would be some of my top picks, and I try to suggest the newer ones so you get more of the latest greatest. Gunbuster is a nice complicated one, but with a lot of fiddly parts and parts removal. Dancouga is awesome for its time, but a bit blocky when not combined and has a very bad neck design(choose between no neck articulation, or insert a jointed neck you have to remove...come on now) on the combined mode. Ideon is really awesome and heavy (probably still the heaviest SOC), but the hip joint shares similar issue with Voltes V, and the weight on the upper body can really topple over if you don't pose it right or have the figure lean on the wall. Hope that helps.

You cannot go wrong with Godsigma or Daltanious they would be my first picks..Godmars is great too,Voltes Gx-31V is the prettiest SOC as far as Im concerned though. Save Daitarn,Zambot and Daioja for later on.Daitarn is complicated,Zambot is when SOC was beginning to get it but not quite,Daioja is light on the diecast but cool.Daimos ,Combattler are classics thou8gh.But for all around coolness, get Daltanious, hes a great combiner and looks great on a shelf. But Godsigma comes in at an extremely close second.Either one would be my choice.

I would also throw in Ideon, Dancouga, and Iron Gear. Honestly all big SOC's are damn good but their not all even. Zambot as stated looks good but it was a early attempt I also favor Daltanius in sturdiness over Daioja. I also believe people overlook Iron Gear a lot, it has such shelf presence and although not the most poseable its built like a brick. Gunbuster just looks awesome with an amazing transformation and the best display base out of all SOC's but can be a touch top heavy.
As for your standard SOC's their all pretty good with your basic non-combining/transforming ones have the most metal % and honestly is the best representative of the SOC line. Sturdy lots of metal and don't cost an arm or a leg. Do yourself a favor pick up cheap a figure like Shin Mazinger or the OVA Getter Dragon and you won't regret it.

Yes I was about to mention Irongear and Ideon but not as a first pick for someone new to SOC.Yes they are both great and own both, but the heart of SOC is 70s anime Super Robots.Ideon and Irongear dont fall in that category.BUT are amongst teh greats of the line.
