I apologize if a category for this genre already exists,
and if it does I request this be moved to the existing thread.
If there is no category for Chinese Tokusatsu, let this be the first.
This may seem a little bit outside what Robot Japan's main focus is (Japanese toy robots, etc).
However, if China and other Asian countries have any tokusatsu they were inspired
by the Japanese tokusatsu genre.
Therefore I feel we should give other Asian tokusatsu stuff a look and see the
goodies they offer.
Any findings can go in this thread here.
Now, before you folks laugh me outta here, I wanna say that I am totally new
to Chinese toku stuff.
I had just discovered it when RJ member GoggleV posted
his pic of Armor Hero in the Toys In Action thread.
I had absolutely no idea that China had always been producing their own tokusatsu and
sentai shows for the past, I dunno, ten years(?) ...I'm so late in the game.
Okay, what do I like about Chinese toku? It all starts with the classic '70s cult hit
"The Super Inframan" (1975, Shaw Brothers). I saw it on the big screen the following
weekend right after seeing Star Wars during its opening week.
I was always under the impression that "The Super Inframan" was a Japanese flick,
until almost 25 years later when I realized it was produced in China by the Shaw Brothers.
Either way, I didn't care whether it was Japanese or Chinese, I was highly impressed
by the martial-arts meets hero robot cyborg element in the movie.
Moving ahead to Nowadays... I see there are more Chinese toku TV shows produced.
They capture the same energy as those John Woo/Jet Li flicks, with the martial-arts
choreography and techno-Tai Chi weaponry, while showing off the Japanese styled
sentai influence featuring cute young teenagers who flash their medallions and
transform into colorful armored Kung-Fu fighting machines trading blows with a slew
of weird ugly monster-borgs and evil henchmen.
From what I've seen so far, I'm very impressed. Check out this cool example
of Chinese tokusatsu awesomeness...
"Jushen ZhanJiDui" (Titan Warstrike Team)
...Hey, I'll take THIS over Saban's cut/paste "Power Rangers" any day!
