Yep, start with is available online and what you liked best when you were younger among them... that way, it wont be too bad on your wallet... Unless you have deep pockets that will keep you from going SOC crazy ...

Definitely don't throw out that styrofoam. What's nice about SoC's is the completing packaging. I got all SOCs combiners/transforming x2 and sometimes X3... so I will keep 1 box clean...

Most of the SOCs are great. So you almost can't go wrong with any...almost. I'll try to give my suggestions without making it into an essay, but it would be safe to say 'go with the most impressive/fond of robot you can get without paying for too inflated price'.
Here are a few not to get: Zambot 3 - cool robot, but mediocre toy design and engineering (poor leg articulations, can't hold most of its weapons well and the weapon tray is a mess). Ideon - While being one of my favorites, the hip is not very stable for its weight, and many folks start having cracked shoulder hinge (though mine is safe). Evangelions - All the Evas have pretty old design and joints become not very stable after a while. Ankle ball joints can't even keep the thing stand well. Reideen - Quite fiddly and not solid for something this simple. Accessories falls off super easy and droopy shoulder plates. Rough finish on chrome metal limbs. Looks good, but not fun to handle.
My top picks (awesome engineering and stability): Daltanius God Sigma Godmars Baikanfu Big O Gunbuster - Almost perfect, minus the weak ankles (again, stability) and somewhat fiddly arm/leg panels. If you don't mind this one issue, its a good buy. General Franky (adding this oddball engineering marvel after I get the chance to open it this Christmas)
All the rest IMHO falls into the 'can't go wrong' category, with small flaws here & there, but overall very enjoyable cool toy.
Hope you find your favorite at a good price.

My first was GX-01R - granted, I was watching the original series back then...or no, I think I was watching Shin Mazinger then.
