I've decided to delve into the world of SOC but I have no clue where to begin. What are people's recommendations for my first one? I've thought about getting the Grendizer GX-04S or Leopaldon both for play value and display value. Display value though is definitely more important to me.

Mmmh, you can start so many different ways, it depends on your focus. If you do not attempt to turn into a completlist (wallet destroyer), my advice is too choose a theme if you want to have a nice collection. You can choose Go Nagai robots and/or super robots from this era. Or just going to the combiners, they are plenty, or simply choose the one you like. It's all about feelings. I started with the SOC-04 Grendizer because I had the popy version with spacer destroyed long time ago by a kid (AAAAAAAAAAAAH) and Grendizer show put me in robot. Then I bought the GX-13 Dancouga : when I was a kid, I never had the money to pick up the Godaikin version. Just licking the toy store window. Then I started to have interest in the SOC line and bought the first (GX-01, 02, etc)... Now I follow this line (BANDAI threw a spell on me, I am cursed) but I do not included spaceships like Yamato and added the SOP Hover Pileder. Keep in mind this is definitly a luxuary hobby... About me (again ?), I am starting to need space to store my collection and I am thinking to fold boxes to keep outer packaging and not keeping the tray and styro. -> going to a compact solution.

I tend to collect mostly Go Nagai based soc robots since they're the ones I grew up watching. Starting a collection should be based on ones own preference. If display value is your primary need then go with the big soc's like Daioja or you can start with a Zambot 3 which is also a big soc with tons of accessories, easy to find and quite affordable.

If you want to be blown away by your first purchase and have great display shelf presence, go with one of the big boys..Daltanious or Godsigma come to mind great combiners and awesome looking..
I started with the ones who are Shogun warriors as that is what i was first exposed to as a kid.You can have a wide selection at Anime Export they have tons of backlog SOC right now,you can get a Combattler GX-03 for 66$ !

To avoid buying too much SOC . I use this rule Fist give point to these 3 (Max 10 each).
1. Anime design : The original design from anime and their gimmick (Transform ,Combine) 2 Toy design : Are they look like anime? Joint/posing. Can they do all gimmick ? Less part swap get better point. 3. Nostalgia : If I never watch them before ,I'll give 5 point If I don't like that series get 4 or less.
From those 3 if they get 24 or more point (80%) I'll look for if the price reasonable? If OK I'll buy it.
Beware if you use this rule, you'll find most your SOC are complex combiner.

I think I'll go with the Go Nagai bots as I grew up with Force Five and Tranzor Z (both, long with Speed Racer, being my first exposure to anime at a very impressionable age). I can definitely see how SOC collecting will be a wallet destroyer. I'm now eyeing the DX Maz with the seperate DX Scrander, that thing looks like a beast that will look amazing in my displays.

Hi, For me, I usually go with the robot that has the most nostalgic value. When I was a kid, the following robots were the ones I watched and loved: Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Grendizer, Dangard Ace,etc.

I came late to the collecting "party." My first SOC was GX-31 Voltes V then I got immediately hooked and purchased GX-31V.

I can definitely see how SOC collecting will be a wallet destroyer. Its not that bad. I think there is a good chance you can sell all your SOCs for around what you paid for them. So in a sense, its like parking your money for a little bit. Pretty much everyone sells around what they paid for the toy, there is no major decline in value as long as you don't damage the toy. At worst, you are eating some of the shipping cost. I would start with Danguard Ace.

I won't lie...I like them all. But, if there was one I'd suggest, it'd be the Ideon...just because it is so darn heavy with gokin.

I had thought about Ideon because of the size and presence, but then I read the thread regarding the issues with the shoulder joint breaking and the fact that it appears to be a very common and inevitable issue on pieces that have been displayed. I just don't want to get involved with a piece I know will break and will be extrememly difficult to fix and costly to replace.

Definitely don't throw out that styrofoam. What's nice about SoC's is the completing packaging.

I agree with mtmte as a very good first parameter (what's currently available). From there concentrate on the theme.

The GX-40 and GX-04S were the first 2 SOC i have bought and imo, the GX-04S is a great way to kick off your SOC collection. Personally, for the SOC line, its too late for me to be a completist, i simply missed out on too many pieces, so i buy what i fancy, no themes, no patterns whatsoever, well, maybe nostalgia does play a small part

Buy what YOU like. If GX-04s or Leopaldon looks good to you then go with it. If I was going to give any soc collecting advice it would be to not talk yourself into thinking you like something because its the new hot item and is getting a lot of discussion. This hobby can be tough to be discerning because of the interest and excitement that gets built up around a figure or a series, and it's easy to spend a lot of money and realize that you have figures you maybe shouldnt have purchased. This happens to all of us here and there, but the main thing is to just plan your purchases, because as others have said, this hobby isn't cheap, unfortunately.
