Was just thinking of how many times Ive paid WAAAY too much for something that is a back catalog item, one released a ways back in other words. Some toys go way up a month after release and just climb steadily.Would you pay twice as much? 5 times as much? for a coveted toy that you really want/need? In this hobby it really is hard to "wait for that deal" when deals RARELY come!.Unless someone is selling a used item cheap, its almost impossible to find a deal on ebay,or backstock at a dealer.
Just today i found myself ALMOST buying an item over 10 times its original price,a small Charawheels Hotwheels Reideen motorcycle.I mean its a 5$ toy or less,I want it very badly but at 80$?? Im just saying NO.I think Im learning to just say no to crazy prices.I mean how many grails are there really in this modern SR collecting hobby?I stopped myself,80$ for a 2-5$ toy? What Im saying is what are your guys experiences,I mean we all MUST buy inflated priced toys if we want a full collection,or even just a toy we really want! But have you stopped yourself before just spending way too much?or just said screw it Im gonna get it!!! we all have done both,Im super guilty of the latter, but what are your guys thoughts on this topic?

I think the trick is to avoid spur of the moment buys on things that aren't actually what you REALLY want. If you know what your actual grails are ahead of time and have an idea of a reasonable price is, the chances of buyers remorse or overpaying are lessened substantially.
With that said... For things I really want but missed out when they were released, I try to limit myself to a maximum of 2X the original price IF it's a contemporary toy. If it's vintage, or more than approximately 10 years old, then it's more a matter of knowing the market, the availability and how bad do I really want it.

150% the original price or 260 dollars.
It's all about perceived value. I believe that GX-31V or God Mars are good toys, just not 300+ dollars good.

In reality, down to 2 factors - How much do you want this item? (How deep is your love in this toy) And how much do you have in your bank? (Income , spending and saving) Don't compare with what other people would do, it is what make yourself happy that count!

150% of the pre order price. I know this kind of thing only came when I'm looking for older/obscure item. After 5 years of collecting modern chogokin figures, I still have enough patience until it finally shows up with a good price. As for the newer items, those that I really wanted I already got em through pre order.
Oh, and I don't mind getting used items, but your mileage may vary..

coming fresh out of a vintage toy collection background, the key thing i learnt, is not to compare a toys's aftermarket prices to its original retail price. we have missed purchasing them when they were just released for various reasons and its all down to how much we want it, be it 10 or 100 times its original value. similarily, collecting modern toys somewhat adheres to the same theory. by and large, collectors tend to pay less when they (take the risk) and preorder the toy, although there are times when the value of the toy depreciates after it was released becuase it turns out to be a dud. on the other hand, should the toy receives rave reviews and its numbers getting limited, its aftermarket price is bound to appreciate and collectors who did not take the chance earlier or ignore for whatever the reasons, can expect to pay more. i guess thats normal. so end of the day, get it if you want it and if your wallet allows, if thats what makes you happy

Honestly, in today's market with modern toy chances are you will get another chance at buying them as a repraint or re-issue. Unless, you are pretty sure that they are non-exist for re-issue.
Take CMs toys for expensive. Those have sky rocketed on ebay. People knew those wont get re-issue ever again so their prices has suggested way above market value. You may want to buy them while they are still "affordable". Another example, Fewture or Bandai products. Those will eventually get re-issued or re-paint release. Look at the Black Getter or Godmars. Granted, if you want the original colors then you need to jump on them as pre-orders.
The last and the only reason that I personally avoid unfair prices is that.........eventually they will be making better and improved versions. The robots we loved and cherished (don't ever forget this) were all popular at one point in the 70s, 80s (some in 90s). Meaning the pool for these robots are very limited with very small pool to choose from. They are bound to re-use the same robot over and over and over again (can we say mazingers or getters). (except for Gundams and power rangers)

I could not see paying more than 2x what it released at and even then I would be struggling with myself. I probably could not do it.
As an aside, Baron, I want THAT Mazinkaiser made from your signature!

Buy what you enjoy, enjoy what you buy.
If you really want it, you'll find a way to get it.

For anything modern, I basically use original retail as a starting point. I know some people bought at discounted preorder or even, clearance prices. For vintage, I try to estimate the price if it was released today.

For me it's a case by case deal, I know how much most things cost when their released so any after market price hike is countered with how much I want the toy. I really want a SRC Mazinkaizer SKL but I'm in no way paying after market prices which are hugely inflated. But it depends on the figure and if I can justify the cost.

Man oh man I'm really bad when it comes to something I want. I watched Aquarion while going through Netflix's offerings once and said, "hey, a toy of this mech would be really cool!". Unfortunately it's been already 2 years since the DX have been released and of course the only place you can buy them would be ebay but at around $400-500. At first, I decided I would not get it but after watching the whole series and enjoying it, I broke down and bought not one but 3. One GD-99 (Original Aquarion) and 2 GE-01's (Assault Type). But I enjoyed them regardless if it needed a stand to stand up. Plus I had the extra cash to do so. The way I see it, just as long your purchase makes you happy and you have the funds for it, why not?

I think we've probably all paid a ridiculous amount for something at some point. And there have also been times that I thought I was paying a lot, which then turned out to be a really good deal within just a few months.
Having experience in the hobby helps, and the longer you are in this hobby, the more you get a feel for how price fluctuations work. It used to be really predictable and much more reasonable until Ebay opened it's doors to China, then suddenly we started seeing brand new figures coming out and Hong Kong sellers listing them with a $50 markup. That was kind of the end of the days when Ebay was a reasonable place to get good deals. Now it's a marketplace full of hucksters.

You live and you learn. I have been collecting for a long time and I've learned this lesson. Years ago I paid 3-5x on eBay for a Atelier Sai Rockman Zero Resin Model Kit. At the time there were only two Rockman Zero figure on the market, the other one was from WSK or something. Both of them were Wonderfest exclusive model kits. Here is the link for the thread from 5 years ago. robotjapan.proboards.com/thread/15062/rockman-kits-moveThis was before we got the Rockman/Megaman Zero Bandai Model kit and the Rockman Zero Bandai Trading Figure. Still waiting for Bandai to release a Rockman Zero figure in their D-Arts line. Anyway, I usually don't pay after market prices anymore for anything. What I learned is that bigger and better things will continue to be made. Use a little patient and as long as I still collect, better renditions will be made. There are some occasion where the item was never made available and the only place to buy them is on eBay. I remember pay close to $100 with shipping for the Goraion (SD Voltron) on eBay because it was pretty much the only way to get it. I think chimungmung.com had it but it was priced higher. Friends from HK told me that it was a $55-$60 item and I had to pay the mark up price cause it was the only way to get it. So usually I don't pay or buy anything on the secondary market. I make it my business to know what being release and stay up to date with all new releases. Basically, if I didn't buy it or preordered it when it was made available, I am not going to backtrack and pay after market prices for the piece. I primary use eBay to sell, rarely to buy. When I do buy from eBay, it is normally lower than the original retail price.
