Watch/button cell batteries can corrode around the inner edge but I've never personally seen them leak (maybe because they are so small?).
As far as alkaline, yes, definitely take them out. Especially anything shaped like a traditional cylinder or rectangle style battery. They will corrode and when they do they leak and ruin toys and contacts. They toys can usually be disassembled and cleaned but the contacts usually can't be saved unless you catch it really early. Ask me how I know.

I just remove the batteries regardless if I do not use them for long periods of time.

Lol... you're welcome, I'm surprised you were able dig out the old review. Regarding "watch type" flat batteries/LR44 and such, yes they can leak over time too, just like regular AA, particularly the very small ones from what I've encountered. I've actually got a batch of various batteries sitting in a tray just to see which type will corrode first. I think the worst disaster I've encountered so far are the flat batteries that came with the first SOC Tetsujin. It was pretty messed up by the time I thought of removing them. The electronics still work but I really hated the grime it left on the insides. BTW Duracell AAA are by far the worst of the lot. I don't know if it's because the local supplier screwed up with the storage, got defective batches, or is just plain selling bootlegged "China backdoor" Duracell AAA, but geez, that stuff just leaks like crazy, even in unopened packaging, you can already see leaking. Terrible, just terrible. The other types of Duracell batteries hold up really well though. It's just their AAA that's crappy. Literally crappy... Weird. Gold

Batteries of any type and size are so easy to forget once they're installed. Be safe: Take them Out. That way you'll avoid Corrosion gungus on the terminals.
