Actually partially painting large machines is very common, and was almost the order of the day in the 60's 70's and early 80's. Paint = Weight. A common fuel saving technique, especially for things that fly, is to use less paint and leave some surfaces bare metal. This is why many airlines have shiny metal planes with only partial paint markings. Many others leave the wing surfaces unpainted. Perhaps the most famous example of this was the U.S. space Shuttle, where after the first few flights the external fuel tank switched from painted white to the burnt orange color of the unpainted material. It would not be unusual to see some robot designs of this period follow this aesthetic. We certainly see it in the Tokutatsu (sp?) / Kaiju shows. Now whether The Mazinger's were intended this way? Who knows. But do take not that the "bare metal" SOC version of Tetsujin 28 is probably the best looking and most visually believable take on the robot. The eye expects it to be a big hulking metal beast. Not a fancy painted sports car. Actually, aircraft are mostly made of aluminum. It has always been recommended not to paint over aluminum, because it hides the corrosion. Most of the military aircraft are not painted. Commercial airlines just have to keep stripping and repainting their aircraft periodically. I'm gonna see if I can do some captures of an old Power Rangers movie, in which their giant robot Zord was chrome. It will show just how unsightly a giant robot with chrome looks like in real life. }D

The only part of Mazinger that was supposed to be white in the original anime was the scrander belt. It's pretty obvious if you compare Mazinger's limbs to the white of Koji's helmet, or notice that the same heavy shading that implies a reflective metal surface is used on both the chrome limbs and the silver-grey head.
Besides which, didn't Go himself answer this question in the instruction booklet for GX-01 and some other places?

Besides which, didn't Go himself answer this question in the instruction booklet for GX-01 and some other places? Its very likely that Bandai and Go Nagai himself agrees that white is actually silver in reality. otherwise they would have insisted making already countleess SOCs parts(particularly mazinger) in white instead of silver or chrome. they could have prioritized making whites first before doing any silver or chrome versions. but unfortunately, its the opposite. actually, they didnt even bother making white versions other than reideen.

Chrome is chrome, silver or metal is not the same as chrome. Chrome is a finish. Even polished aluminum/stainless steel is different from chrome.
So you got guys that like colors exactly as in screen and guys who mentally convert thise colors to real life equivalents of what they percieve as silver/metal/chrome. I love the white on screen, but not always on my figures. Even though what Im seeing is accurate, it bothers me at times. Have no clue why. I really try to understand white on Mazinger Z but it looks like hes wearing white thermals under black armor plating.
Cant unsee

I feel the same way, but in the opposite direction. I think the silver used on the SRC Mazingers looks good, because it looks almost like polished aluminum - almost "white". I also agree that pure white may be way too bright on an actual figure, which has light hitting it from all directions, not just the front. However, I still like the figure to sport the same look as it does on screen. The silver colors used on most stock Mazinger figures doesn't give me that. They can look pretty dark in less than perfect lighting. Just not the same as the screen counterpart. As far as real world looks, I don't even consider it. Unlike the Pacific Rim, or Robotjox, or even the Bayformer robots, I just can't picture a real life Mazinger, Getter, or Combattler without laughing inside. }D

Ive always tried to imagine a real super robot and it would look silly. The closest to looking real world robot would probably be that gundam in japan but a super robot? I would also giggle. Imagine the army coming out with a colorful super robot, people would laugh. I feel the same way, but in the opposite direction. yes Chachi but the world wouldn't laugh in the 70s when those colors were very popular !!just like the colors of muscle cars in the 60s and 70s or bright pink green and orange freestyle bmx bicycles of the 80s. I live for all of those things as I love colors and wish the world was neon. Today's greys and bland colors disgust me ..especially as an artist all cars are some shade of grey it's so ugly and boring. I would love giant red blue and yellow army robots they are colors of victory!!! They wouldn't camouflage well but they would look great to me! I love color and anyone who collects classic SRs and doesn't like color is lying!

A super robot does not need camouflage colors. The bright colors scream look at me, I am the last thing you will ever see. Boom!
