Hey guys,
Its my first time buying from Canada, and seller is not willing to mark the item as "gift" on the customs form. I also do not know what shipping carrier the seller use since it was free shipping.
Anyone been hit with customs fees when receiving their merchandise? I live in the U.S.
Any insight would be awesome. Just want to prepare myself.
Thanks!

It happens to me regularly...most recently, was the $70+CDN I had to fork over for the already $$$$ DX Chogokin Great Mazinger that CD Japan had marked as a "gift". So, I would not sweat this. And just cross your fingers that you don't get dinged. Mind you, I'm up in Canada and so, maybe US customs have a very black/white rule towards parcels marked as "gift"...?

Thanks Yumcha,
Wow, $70+ CAD is a lot of dough. I already dropped $300 on this toy, and hope I wont get hit with any custom fees. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, and all the PoLs from BBTS guaranteed are custom fees...and those are usually $1000+ worth of toys...it's part of the cost of this insane hobby, LOL. And honestly, with the way the CDN dollar continues to sink, I may just go bankrupt trying to keep up with all the cool stuff incoming. Ugh. Good luck!

I live in the U.S. and have never gotten charged by customs for any international shipments sent to my address.

I have never been charged by customs sending via the postal system. I have been charged a high brokerage fee from buying a car part from Canada that was shipped through DHL, though. The customs at the time was only $10 or so, but the brokerage fee was over $60. Unless ordering from Germany I avoid DHL. Also avoid UPS for international as their brokerage is even higher. I have gotten fedex a few times from HLJ and have never been hit with customs or anything.

If I remember correctly, all item coming to canada that as a value over 20$ is taxable.
Only exception is a gift, the first 60$ cannot be taxed.
Now add the fees if express mail or registered air mail is chosen, it get higher.
Never use a private carrier (UPS/FedEx,etc), because they will add broker fees. You won't pay those using Canada Post / USPS

Just to update. My item arrived from Canada safely (from Canada Post), and thankfully, no custom fees. So any of you U.S. residents who are hesitant to purchase from Canada, as long as you use Canada Post, you shouldn't get charged a custom fee.
