I know I've shared something similar before, so please bear with me. Thanks for letting me vent. No one around me can relate to what I'm going to express... Again. When I talk about this to non-members of this board, they think this issue of mine is the most FIRST WORLD problem ever! I truly appreciate you guys listening and possibly responding.
As I mentioned before, I was super excited when I heard rumors about the Soul of Chogokin line possibly ending when the GX-100 was announced. I was really hoping for this because:
- I wanted a sense of completion/closure. I've been collecting the line for over 20 years. I didn't want to continue anymore! In a nutshell, I had enough! I wanted to say, "Hurrah! I reached my goal... GX-01 to GX-100!"
- I don't have enough room (I only have two Ikea Detolf cabinets). Our extra bedroom is half SOC boxes. When we have guests over, they are terrified of boxes possibly toppling over them while sleeping (I'm not exaggerating, that room looks the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark).
- What am I going to do with my SOC collection in the future? I plan to let them go when I'm 80 or something. Would I sell them? If so, are their prices going to appreciate or depreciate decades from now? We don't have kids, so who would I pass them onto if I don't sell my collection? And would the possible inheritor(s) appreciate my robots (This is my nightmare... my collection going to folks who will not love the robots).
But who am I kidding? I will hate my birthdays and Christmas if I don't get SOCs as gifts. They're what I've been looking forward to as gifts during these special occasions for over two decades! Alright, I would have survived for years even if the line stopped at GX-100 because I only have the regular/color versions of the SOC line. I was planning on asking for black versions, recolors, renewal versions, accessories, limited items, special items and the rest of the SPEC line (they started out as SOCs) if the line ended.
Despite wishing the end of the line, I can not imagine life without SOC's! Aside from the robots being super fun to collect and to play with, they take all my stresses away (I forget about work, problems, etc...). As soon as I step into our extra room with my collection, I become a little kid again! What more can I ask for? Okay, for the line to end!
Thanks for listening. Let me know your thoughts...
P.S. I already know that I'm getting GX-101 for Christmas. Oh, no...

I think your answer is inside your own message my friend. SOCs make you happy. Getting happiness in life is what we all seek. It may seem shallow to some people, but not everyone is happy the same way or with the same thing. Some people may find it in children, others in traveling, and others in collecting. I can relate with you on the fact that this hobby keep me away and let me relax when I'm tired of everyday problems (and believe me there are many in my country, and my life is far from perfect). Also, I've meet great people (and many friends) thanks to this hobby, so it is a big part of my life. About the SOC line, it was never my wish to have them all. When it comes to mechas I choose robots, not lines so I go for the best representation and in the scale I want of the robot. I have a list, and keeps growing with every anime or figure I discover (and I have the iron rule of only one figure per mecha, to keep this from getting too cramped). You enjoy having every SOC, so you may keep getting every release or you may just go for the ones you like, just keep enjoying it. The moment you don't enjoy getting a figure you should stop, but if you keep enjoying it, you should do it until your last day. You should not worry about what will happen to your collection, in the end it will have fulfilled its purpose: make you happy. Have a good and happy life my fellow collector.

Rules for collecting are a good way to keep your collection manageable. Manage your collection or it will manage you. As for what rules you use, that’s something you’ll have to come up with. I can only say what I would do if I was in your position.
I’d pick a number. Could be a well-thought-out number, or a number that means something like a birth year, or just something arbitrary. But for the sake of argument, let’s say I pick 50. I’d make a list of my collection and try to figure out which ones make me happiest and which ones I could live without. That’s the toughest part. Along the way I’d probably come up with some rules that help me define what I like and why.
Once I felt good about my list, I’d start downsizing to 50 Soul of Chogokin toys. It would take years. And I’d probably have some regrets and reverse some decisions along the way. But once I got down to 50, I’d try to keep it there. I’d always keep my list updated, and whenever I got a new SOC, another old one would be on the way out.
But I’d keep the new SOCs rolling in for Christmas and whatnot, cause that’s the most fun part.
Closure is something that rarely happens in this life. You kinda have to make peace with that, and make your own closure to the best of your ability.
Good luck, Mazfan.

I’m glad I’m not completist of Bandai SoC. I think I only bought 3 out of the last 25 releases of SoC.

Bandai: "NEVER!" The completist retires at GX-100. But the new you rise again and move forward, cherry picking only releases you really want/need. Simple, while still keeping your legacy from GX-01 to 100. Just open a new chapter with a new mindset moving forward. You can still enjoy your accomplishment with your 'hall of fame' display of those 100.

Look man. Get out of the hobby ok? Just do a fire sale of all your chogokin items at 1/4 of what you bought em for to us members here for listening to your doubts... lol

My other question... Am I overcompensating? When I was a kid in the 70s, my family couldn't afford to buy me these beloved robots of mine. Is this part of the reason why I'm borderline hoarding them? Only a small portion of the SOC releases are from shows I used to watch (Mazinger Z, Voltes V, Daimos, Gaiking, Grendizer and Getter Robo). It's important for me to recognize this. Overcompensating and being a completist is a dangerous mix My dream is to have a space where I can display my whole collection. In the mean time, I will continue to ponder how I should move forward with my collection.

I feel your pain mazfan and in a similar situation myself coming from a similar background of reclaiming all the toys I'd never got as a kid. I'm having a similar problem of deciding should I just scale it all down towards building a very limited display of bots I've grown up with vs just having a literal hoard of really awesome toys. Just know you're not alone and that there are many of us fellow collectors out there that are pondering similar thought processes as we all get older

darkfriar... Thanks for letting me know that you are able to relate. I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone in the "struggle." We are so fortunate to have "a literal hoard of really awesome toys."

For me, when toys take over real estate, that's when I need to reassess what I'm doing and purge. No matter how much FOMO I am feeling or the need to keep up and be a completionist. It's ok to not collect everything and still be happy with what you've got. I hope you find your peace with whatever decisions you make.

Yeah I'm on the same boat too. My father couldnt buy me the expensive toys, but he payed us a good school, so my schoolmates used to have all the cool toys. So when I grew up and started having my own money I decided to get those things I loved and cherished as a child, I'm still deciding if that was a good idea hahaha

bocasas... My dad did buy me one when I was a kid. It was the most affordable die-cast in the store. And so it was of no surprise that I had no clue who it was. Regardless, I was in love with that robot. I played with it non-stop and I carried it with me everywhere! I was going to bring it with me when we immigrated to the U.S. but my parents made me give it to a relative. I did wear a Grendizer shirt on the plane, though
