Hi, I just started on SOC but still have a couple of questions I hope you guys can help me with...
What the difference between GX and GD? What is gattai?
So far, I collect only Bandai's SOC range. WHy do I see so many items also using the word chogokin?
Thanks.

Welcome to robot-japan, nickgreat. The GX designation refers to items in the Soul of Chogokin series. GD is another series of Bandai toys. "gattai" is roughly translated as transform or transformation: Dancouga is a gattai set. All the modules change form. Chogokin originally meant "super alloy" referring to the first diecast Mazinger Z. Now it just refers to diecast metal, as opposed to plastic toys. JWM

Just to add to what JWM said. Gattai is to transform by coming together--- combiners... In the SOC line there are currently 4 real combiners; Combattler V, Dancouga, Zambot, and Gaiking (some may say the Getters also, but I don't think they count). Voltes V is the next big gattaing robot for the line.

Ok, that makes much more sense now. Thanks guys!
I've managed to get myself 7 (of the cheaper) sets already. So quite a big hole in my pocket. I wonder if SOC is gonna come up with Voltron. I just love that one!

I don't see a SOC Voltron/GoLion anytime soon, but Toynami is coming out with a brand new Voltron with diecast. But knowing Toynami's reputation this might be a good/bad thing.

Nobody saw Dancougar coming either - and he's more or less the same vintage as Golion so who knows... Maybe Bandai has something up their sleeve we don't know about yet... :/

Just checked out Toynami's Voltron.
Details look good but seemed kind of skinny to me. I remember Voltron as being really strong and robust, not the lean gundam type. Yoynami's version looks quite plasticky too.
Really hope SOC comes up with a version.
Btw, do all chogokins have the same scale?

There are a million threads on scale of these guys. The plain answer is: no - there is no such thing as "scale" among SOC... but they do look good together. For instance, GX-01R, GX-02R, and GX-04 all stand about the same height, each one just a tiny bit taller than the last. The fembots are also the same "scale" and are just a bit shorter.... so in that sense, I guess, yeah, there's a certain sense of scale to them.
The gattai sets (GX-03,13,23, etc) are obviously a little bigger. Are they "scale" to the rest of them? who knows... The only guy who was obviously way off was the GX-05 dragon, where Bandai pulled a "Star Convoy" stunt and included a tiny Gaiking figure to show how big the beast was supposed to be...
