Man, Life would not be complete without some form of Mazinkaiser. Aoshima or Max Factory, you have to get one of them. MAzinger Z and Great Mazinger are just not complete without Mazinkaiser. This fig in and of itself will take you to the dark side, or let you see the light how ever you prefer it.
JWM as far as Gold Lightan, man I am actually very stoked about him. Think Boss Borot, goofy fig but HEAVY with the diecast. A big rectangular chunk of chogokin is what a man needs in the morning to start a good day. I myself will get Gold Lightan F A S T!
Mazfan, you will not be able to resist when it comes time to branch out of Bandai's Soul of Chogokin line, there are just too many other cool bots out there. Heck even the old school Giant Robo by Yamoto is a sweet gokin.

I'm with mazfan. I mostly concentrate on the SOC line. But I think its up to personal preference. I don't really like Mazinkaiser. I like the shin getter but theres no getter 2 or 3. That is a deffinite turn off. I stray away from bot that I am not familiar with like Zambot, Dancouga, BF, Godanner(this one is getting hard to resist). But I do have some Macross and Gundam bots.

so, are we back to one of those discussions again well, most of us would agree, that given the situation that money is no problem at all, we would buy every damn SoC, aoshima, MF, SHE, etc. etc. etc. that is available on the market... but alas not all of us are filthy rich so we develop some sort of preference; according to our tastes and our income (mostly) I just stick to the fun factor and as usually preach to go for what you like and can afford, without selling close relatives (though this has been intriguing for some of us). ...btw mazfan, stay away from that MF mazinkaiser, really, your resistance would be futile

how can you say no to Godannar??? (I'm going to say this again).. HAVE You seen the elbow JOINTS? PURE GENIUS! they were able to keep the anime esthetics, but still have the prefect forearms (with out indentations, or that wonky pull out forearm to expose elbow joint). (cry)... its beautiful.. (cry) so beautiful.... I love my soc, and this will be my first CHOGOKIN thats not SOC (not that I don't like Aoshima... but I think they'll have a better version out in the future... plus where the heck is getter 2 and 3??? WTF!)

Hi tecnoworld. Yeah, I mostly have the regular color version of each SOC release. I do have the black and white Combattler (a gift) and the GX-02R (my GX-02's left arm is really loose). I surprised myself when I started getting the PX line. The Mazinger head and Pilder are what got me into it. I like the PX's but they do look sort of out place, in comparrison to the SOC's--no regrets though... Wow, I am so glad that I started this trend. It's such a good theraphy session. I like my collection. But an important question is will I like it less when I decide not to get all of the SOC's from here on up? Here's what you have to ask yourself: what do you get out of collecting only SOCs, on a personal "collecting" level? Maybe this is what gives you collecting satisfaction, because there is something to be said about a full line of SOCs, which is very cool, but then does this mean you are buying SOC robots that you don't really care for, and passing up on robots you would have liked to get just to keep within the SOC collecting line? And maybe this is what you would rather do. I know for me and probably a lot of us here, it's more of a pick and choose thing, based upon each robot as it stands on its own. Personally, I'm not collecting the full line of anything, at least not on purpose, but that's how I like it. I am very choosey however as I demand super coolness in my bots! ;D But anywy, the whole point is that you are collecting what you want to collect, and I'll admit that sometimes it's not that easy to figure out when you come to places like this and get bombarded with robot news and opinions!

Are you guys telling me that the SOC line is a bit inferior in comparrison to other brands? That's kind of hard to believe... But then again, I have not really explored the others. Not inferior just different plus it will be a loooong time before we see a SOC Mazinkaiser, GGGG, Shin Getter, Godannar, or Dai Shogun if ever. Why deprive yourself of these great figures to just stay true to SOC's, in some ways they are "better" than SOC's and others they are "worse" but both MaxGokin and Shin Seiki are great lines that deserve a look.

When I first started collecting SOC's, I only intended to acquire robots that I was familiar with (Mazinger Z, Voltes V, Daimos, Grendizer, to name a few). In fact, I was hesitant to get my first SOC since it was Great Mazinger--I didn't know much about this guy. However, I couldn't refuse because it was given to me sort of as a gift (payment for a debt was more like it). I liked Great Mazinger enough (how could anyone refuse die-cast, right?) that it made me search for Mazinger. This was 2000 and I was still gainfully employed in the .com world and I was able to afford most frivolous things. I immediately purchased Grendizer (for an outrageous amount at Heroes Club in SF) and went via eBay to get other things (GX-01X and Mazinger). My next purchase was Combattler V. I succumbed because he was the closest thing to Voltes V. Then came the Getters (I was only vaguely familiar with them) and Gaiking (I knew this guy). At this point, I was pretty happy with my collection because I knew most of what I owned. I became ecstatic when Aprhodite A came out. I purchased the Mazinger Ova at the same time because I was just so glad about my first fembot. As you can tell, I was hooked. At this stage, I thought that every SOC that would be released was from my wish list. I thought that Voltes V and Daimos were just around the corner. I was wrong...I was not familiar with the next series of fembots released. And I think that I left the Philippines to ever have heard or seen Bossborot--but who cares... He was part of Mazinger Z.
Then came Dancouga... I really had no idea who this guy was. My first thought was that he was mega 80's looking. Hence, his design would be out-of-place, in comparrison to my existing 70's style collection of robots. Plus, I was an ex-.comer by this time and my stocks have all plummeted (Dancouga was too expensive). Fortunately, my honey purchased Dancouga for Christmas. This became the point of no return. I told myself that I must get all SOC's from here on up because Dancouga was so cool! Despite throwing off the overall look and feel of my collection, I felt that Dancouga's awesome craftsmanship kept the outstanding design consistency of my collection. I must have it all...
The other important thing that I realized was that by continuing my SOC obsession, I was able to learn about other robots. I began watching the Eva series and purchased the Getta dvd's. This was really fun because it brought back my appreciation for the cartoons. See, I feel that most of the toys are better than the 70's animation--they are pretty lame when I watch them again. But this is not true for Eva or the newer Getter's (this is just my opinion).
Wow, it's past midnight and I am just going on and on... No one can really relate to my obsession around me--especially my spouse. However, I know that you guys would care. Thanks for letting me share.

Great post, Mazfan. One of the interesting aspects of this hobby obsession is that, except for those who grew up with this stuff, most of the people who get hooked on Japanese robots seem to do so without any outside influence. That is- nobody gets into collecting SOC figures because everyone else they know has a huge stash. We all seem to just stumble on this on our own. And we all seem to take at least a little ribbing from wives, girlfriends, and family. It's part of the fun. I got hooked back in 1977. It would take twenty eight years, and the invention of the internet, before I actually spoke to another collector or met one in person. And that was just this last summer, when I got together with JB and Mazinkaizer to check out a toy show/swap meet. We had a good time. The internet has certainly added a great new dimension to the collecting game.
I'm gonna' drop this post and move on before I spend all morning doing this instead of working on my ridiculous story. Everyone's in bad trouble. I gotta' get 'em out.

I grew up on Transformers (which I still love) but I discovered RJ when I bought the Optimus Prime issue of Super 7 magazine and saw the ad that Ed placed. When I decided to check the site, I got hooked. Dancouga and Combattler were my "gateway drugs" to the world of SOCs, and SRs for that matter. I still haven't seen any of the Getter shows, and I vaguely (at best) remember Mazinger as Tranzor Z in the '80s. So yeah, the term Chogokin became familiar to me hardly 2 years ago. Anyway, back on topic... It does take a lot of discipline to stick to one series or toy line. Discipline that, sadly, I lack. [reverse psychology]My advice to you would be to avoid getting Aoshima's Black Winged Overseas Mazinkaiser, which goes perfectly with GX-01R Maz and GX-02R Great Maz.[/reverse psychology]

Everyone has their reason for collecting SOC's but most of them was because we are all nostalgia and want to get Super Robots of the past. Mazfan, wasn't that your reason for collecting SOC's. Sticking strictly to SOC's is rediculous. It's like playing only one video game system, or eating only one type of food. Unless you order all your SOC online, you've probably went to a couple of hobby stop and looked at the other types of robots. I don't know if its will power or that you simply aren't interested in the other brands. Seeing a Mazinkaiser up close, I can't help but want to get one. The only other reason that I can think of for you resistances is that you aren't impress with the other companies like aoshima and max factory. I don't know how you can ignore them. Maybe you don't like Mazinkaiser, thats got to be it.

Hello superfarterv... Yeah, I've been to a number of shops. And yep, I've yet to be drawn to purchase other brand lines of robots. The first reason is that I thought that SOC was top-of-the-line and no other brands compare. However, after hearing everyone's comments on this thread... Well, I guess not. Still, being the best brand or not, it would still be hard press for me to get non-SOC's. As I mentioned, I am a pretty focused kind of person when it comes to personal interestes. I pretty much follow one music label, 4AD. I am a loyal Apple user and would never own a PC. I primarily read Filipino American books (okay, I am also a big New Yorker magazine reader). The list goes on...
I guess what I am also saying is that I have brand devotion--just like the whole Apple vs PC thing. SOC got me hooked and I am happy with it.
It's my birthday today and I will soon get my Akira bike (yeah, yeah... this is not really SOC). I will not be able to sleep tonight (it's midnight).

Hey, do whatever makes you happy man. If SOC does the trick, then right on (it would sure make life cheaper if that worked for me..), but just be aware that there is some great stuff out there that is just as exciting, if not more in some cases, than SOC. Happy Birthday!!!
