So what is your feeling on the SOC line, the early years?
Do you feel that there are any standouts, cause I've enjoyed mine but lost some interest.
You?

I love my SOC's... from 01 to 20 to the recent ones. I am here in Italy for vacation and I miss my collection--I've been gone for two weeks!

minus the evas, the first 20 are among my favorite toys, and by far my most dynamically posed shelf...nothing since then has really caught my attention, although I am glad they are making such a wide variety of stuff
standouts: -daiku maryu is always fun...cant touch the damn thing without poking myself... -grendizer...just love the look of this guy, with his goofy banana horns -boss borot...SO much fun to pose -and aphrodai, cause she's the first one i bought.

I think GX-03, GX-04, and GX-13 are outstanding. They are some of my favorites in my small collection ;D ;D.

The EVA's were the only ones I bought, and to this day, I don't think any other EVA toy has measured up to these in terms of detailed sculpts, poseability and overall quality. Not the Revoltechs, the old Segas and Kaiyodos, or even Banda's own SOC Spec EVA.

Love them all but wish they make them bigger to match the height of the newer SOC.

Oddly enough the only Maz figure I have is the GX07. I've almost bought an 01r and an 02, but if I get those I'll need the girls and the Boss, and Garada, and Doublas, and the head, and the.... so I leave it at one Mazinga. I was disappointed in the GX03. It's poorly detailed, the transform is a pain, and the figure barely stands up straight. I like the Daikumaryu, but almost all the plastic clip on accessories have broken. And I'm not exactly playing crash-em robot fights with the thing. The GX06 is a great set. Dancouga is just a world class toy. At first I didn't care for it, but over the years I've come to appreciate it as a good candidate for all-time best SOC. The Dragon, Liger, and Poseidon figures are as good as toys get. The Eva's are in a class by themselves. They are marred only by inconsistent quality control in the joints. An Eva with tight joints is unbelievably poseable. But if the knees, or ankles are loose it becomes a flopper, or worse, a shelf diver.
All in all I'm in two minds about the SOC line in general. I accept it that these things are more in the category of Franklin Mint figures than toys. But if I'm going to kick out serious bucks for a shelf piece I want the same Bandai quality control that goes into a PG model kit. I'd actually be willing to pay more, or be more willing to pay, if I knew there wasn't a chance of getting skunked on the purchase.

Loved everything except for the EVAs and Xabungle. But I gotta agree. The line has lost some of its appeal to me. Mostly due to quality control issues on Voltes (of all the robots to have paint problems.. sigh) and the line up of the upcoming characters are also becoming less and less familiar to me. Guess every toy has to have "fillers" to keep the line going.
Still I'm glad they're still improving on the line with innovations like the display bases becoming more functional and including more accessories with the toys.

SOCs are what they are. Basically with only a couple of exceptions, SOCs are sterile remakes of vintage figures, but not as sturdy and without the catchet of the originals.
I'm with jwm on QC. I always feel its odd when a $20 Transformer is built more sturdy and with better QC than a $200 collectible figure. Big dollars should = big quality. Always.
I have a two beefs with SOCs (or Bandai really).
#1) I often feel like Bandai is trying to recycle designs without having to put a lot of effort into it. Thus we often get sub-par products.
#2) I wish that Bandai would view the design of all their SOC line in the same manner as they did with Dancouga. Why not make each release a sort of new and updated version instead of just doing the lowest common denominator thing?

I definitively go with my dancouga, though I love my black trio (gx-01b, gx-02b and gx-04b) it's dan who literally stands out of the whole pack and as jwm and xiombarg pointed out, if I pay top dollar I would like to get the equivalent in quality of design and making. so far I only had some minor issues with my figures but that only because I can get a lot of information here, before I buy anything for my collection. there is another thank you due to all the people who review those toys for me/everybody! thanks for keeping me from buying the wrong toys; saved me a lot of disappointment

What the world needs is a new series of die-cast DX mechas that mixes old and new.

If Bandai really wants to get my attention, here's what they need to do:
Give me a figure that is made of metal. M-E-T-A-L metal. Not mostly metal with some plastic parts. (well, OK- the clear stuff like the eyes, but that's it.) And certainly not mostly plastic with some metal parts. I want a toy robot made of metal. (Get the idea?)
I want the detail, engineering, and QC of a PG model.
The figure should have articulation and balance at least as good as the Evas, or the PG Strike Gundam, preferably better. No problems with loose, sloppy joints, or fittings so tight that you risk breaking pieces.
An outer box not made of cheap cardboard. (See Godannar)
That should about do it.

If you take out the Maz Bots and the EVA's, you really only have a few options. Don't get me wrong, I have and love all of them. However, they didn't have much varitey in the early years. Even though some people have been unhappy with the more recent releases, I like that we are now getting more varity.
With that being said, my 2 favorites in this time frame are Dancougar and the GX-06 getter team. Dany-boy is probably my favorite SOC in the entire line. It appears to be a very complex design (4 bots each with multiple modes and one super bot mode). However, it is simple enough that you can take it down and play with it without getting flustrated. It is also a perfect transformation and you don't have to go looking for other parts to make it work or look good.
