It has been a couple of years since I've given my SOC Collection Review. I have some time this afternoon and thought about spending some time typing brief feedback about my treasured collection. Opening and assembling my Ideon inspired me to do this. Waiting for my Aquarion also helped.
;D
LOVE (my top 7, in order, #1 being my ultra favorite):
- GX-34 Gunbuster: Awesome design, very contemporary (in comparison to Ideon). I still can't believe that those two large ships combine into this fantastic robot (more amazingly... I was able to assemble the robot). I still stare in awe of it....
- GX-13 Dancouga: This robot rocks. It looks cool as a giant piece or broken down to three different creatures. It's solid and impressive looking (this was my former #1)
- BPX-01 Spce Battleship Yamato: Okay, so it is almost all plastic (hardly any die-cast). I guess that I like it a lot because it sticks out from my all robot collection (it also strays from my SOC's--I am a purist by heart). Plus, it has all the sounds and lights.
- GX-04 UFO Robo Grendizer/GX-04X Marine Spazer/Drill Spazer: I still can't believe that I almost spent $400 on these two separate units! GX-04 was my second SOC purchase (It was still the hight of the .com days and I didn't even think twice when I bought it for $270 at Heroes Club). A few years later my spouse purchased the GX-04X abroad for over $100. Though I am now more into the bigger, more complicated SOC's, I still appreciate the clever design of Grendizer. I love how you are able to fit him with many different kinds of ships. Plus, he's able to shrink and be housed by that saucer. Cool!!!
- GX-31 Voltes V: Surprised? I am Filipino after-all. I guess this is not #1 because I was expecting way to much from it (childhood fantasy and all). Plus the legs of my unit are not even (I've given up adjusting it).
- GX-09MA Mineva X Angels Version: Wow, gorgeous and so unusual. It's a crowd pleaser when I show it to family and friends (people are able to relate to why I collect these things when I show her off).
- GX-01 Mazinger Z, GX-07 Mazinger Z OVA Version, GX-08 Aphrodai A, GX-10 Bossborot, GX-02R Great Mazinger, GX-01R Mazinger Z: Alright... I am cheating, there is a whole bunch over here. I am a bigger Mazinger fan than Voltes (I hear all the Pinoys gasping!). If I am not such a big fan of larger SOC's all of these robots would be place on top of my list. They bring back such fond memories for me. Plus, I appreciate all of the die-cast. Bossborot is also a great comic relief for my SOC collection. Everyone else look so serious next to him.
:)LIKES (in order, the higher the number on the list, the more I like it)
- GX-36 Ideon: Okay, this is up here because I just got it (this happens all the time, the new one becomes somewhat of a fav). You've read all of my complaints how about how red and boxy looking this guy is. But regardless of my criticism, I am still in awe of all its metal and Ideon just look so Bad Ass with its gun (it lights up and so this earns lots of points).
- GX-18 Getter Dragon, GX-19 Getter Liger, GX-20 Getter Poseidon: I really dislike the GX-06 set and so getting this version really made me appreciate the Getters more. Clever design and the color scheme rocks. Poseidon is my fav (so solid and cool), followed by Liger (kick ass weapons).
GX-14 Evangelion, GX-15 Evangelion 02, GX-16 Evangelion 00, GX-17 Evangelion 00, GX-21 Evangelion, GX-22 Evangelion 04: I love the posablity of these robots. I have fun playing and posing with them. I was not familiar with this series. I began to watch it and loved it. This is one of the reasons why I love SOC's, it helps me discover other robot shows.
- PX01 Mazinger Head and Pilder: These would be higher on the list if the Mazinger's head is not made of plastic (on close inspection, it looks like a cheap Halloween mask). On the plus side, the Pilder is almost all metal and its propellers spin! Thank god that the head's eyes light up (it is its saving grace). Get this unit if you do not have it yet, it rocks!!!
- GX-09 Mineva X, GX-12 Venus A, X-08MA Aphrodai A Angels Version, GX-11MA Dianan A Angels Version, GX-12MA Venus A Angels Version: Creative and innovative designs. I am so glad that I have the ladies. They are good counter-balance to all of the dudes. And hey, how can you resist missile breasts, right? I wish I am able to afford the third incarnation of these amazonian babes! Girl Power!!!
- GX-23 Mutekichojin Zambot 3: This is my least favorite out of all the big SOC robots. Maybe because one of my Zambot Ace's leg broke while assembling it (the robot just brings back bad memories). It's also too squarish looking. It's hard to pose this bad boy, it just sort of stands there. Not impressed...
- GX-24 Tetsujin 28: I dropped this bad boy a number of times and it is still in one piece (its eyes still light up and everything). Fun, retro design and the color scheme rocks! I love this dude.
- GX-28 Xabungle: I am so surprised that I really like this robot. It's almost all plastic and it's tiny. However, I love the design, both as a robot and vehicles. Also, how can you resist a robot that wears skis?
- GX-27 Gaiking: There is something not quite right with this robot for me. Did they skimp out on the metal? It feels too light. I do like the design and I am glad that it is bigger than the tiny version that comes with GX05.
- GX-29 Black Ox: This does not compare with GX-24 Tetsujin 28. It just sort of stands there all hunch backed. I remember playing a lot with Tetsujin... I just kind of ignored this one. Overall it is still cool. Hey, its eyes light up (always a plus).
- GX-25 Garada K7/GX-26 Doublas M2: It's cool to have some of the bad guys (though they should only focus on the good guys. There are way too many of them... Uhmmm... Release Daimos). I feel that these two are just made of recycled parts from Mazinger Z SOC's. However, cool design, I really like the neck of Doublas and the missile eyes of Garada.
- PX-03 Akira Keneda's Bike: This one sticks out of my collection. The uber confident look of the figure is hilarious. I also appreciate all of the die-cast and ads of the bike.
- GX-03B Com-battler V: This was given to me as gift from a friend, not my spouse. I am forever in debt with my friend. Can you believe that? A super expensive gift. And so this has a special place in my heart for me. I don't collect the black and white versions (I sold my Mazinger one). But I really like how much more solid this version is (my color Combattler keeps disassembling, see my review of it below).
- GX-35 Walker Galliar: If this unit was not green (my favorite color), it probably would have made it to the DISAPPOINTED list. It's just not as cool as Xabungle. Kinda boring.
???DISAPPOINTED (in order, the lower... the more I dislike it)
- GX-02 Great Mazinger: One of the arms of my unit became really loose. I am not that mechanically inclined to fix this. This would be part of my top 7 if I didn't come across this problem.
- GX-01X Launch Base: I used to love this until it stopped working. I thought that it was only me then I realized that everyone's unit broke at the same time. I think I heard everyone's sigh of disappointment when their elevator stopped working. Was it on a fixed planned obsolescence thing? Too bad, this would have been part of my top 7. I used to impress tons of people with this.
- GX-06 Getter Robo: Too plasticy and cheesy looking. I hate all the red colors.
- GX-11 Dianan: Just bad design and awful color scheme. Its breasts are also trigger happy--I keep losing the missiles!
- GX-05 Daiku Maryu/Gaiking: This system has tons of potentials but lots of its parts just would not lock in place (horns keep popping off, big knife keeps falling off, etc...). Plus it is just way too small. The little Gaiking dude is super-flimsy--my main problem!
- GX-03 Com-battler V: I bought this long time ago because it was the closest thing I could get to a Voltes V (I was not a completist before then). My unit keeps disassembling. Half of its body has fallen a couple of times. My version is trashed... Too bad.
- PX-02 Cyclone: I only got this because I was able to buy it for $35. The figure is impossible to pose and his clothing materials keep falling off. The only saving grace of this unit is that it lights up.
- GX-30 Battle Fever J: I should have never gotten this and left it in my WOULD NEVER GET list. It's cheesy looking and it totally feels like plastic. Plus, it just looks like an action figure. What a waste of money (thank god it was a gift).
>:(WOULD NEVER GET (in order of repulsion, but who knows... I might get them all one of these days because I am so dedicated to completing my SOC's)
- GX-33 Leopardon: Out of all my 3 least favorite SOC, this is the one that I may actually spend my money on. The youtube.com demo is helping me change my mind. I don't like it because the design reeks of bad 70's aesthetics.
- GX-32 Gold Lightan: Golden cheese, that's how I see this guy. It's like bad Vegas. Plus it's really tiny and it does not do very much.
- GX-37 King Joe: I just can't stand the design. I almost lost all faith in Bandai when I first saw this robot. I asked myself... What were they thinking about.
This is all for now. I can't wait to add my Aquarion to the list. Oh yeah, I am also really excited in all of the upcoming SOC's. I am definitely getting GX-38, 39 and 40. My faith is restored.
;D
