Kids' WB! announced today that they have picked up the new Astro Boy series that is currently airing in Japan. Sony Pictures Television, Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan and Tezuka Productions are responsible for the new production which does not have a set airdate in the U.S. The animé-adventure is set to debut with 26 episodes on the network's Saturday morning schedule in the 2003-2004 season.

I LOVE Astroboy, but I'm a little concerned about what WB might do with the series to make it more attractive to modern audiences

The best thing they could do to keep Astroboy attractive would be to just leave it as it comes from Japan. I hate to be cynical, but I fear the McCarthyites of political correctness will make sure that Astroboy never does anything to offend anyone at any time. Maybe he'll save the environment, or rescue endangered species. Or not... JWM

They can so easily ruin astroboy just by the sort of voice and music they use for him...trying to make the show too "cool" for kids. The WB has certainly been guilty of that before

I hope Astroboy gets a good time slot where the kids and adults can see it. For instance I remember Robotech being aired at 6:00 AM in Florida. Arrrrgghh! As much as I wanted to watch the series, I couldn't wake up that early.....

This thread started me thinking. Astroboy was my introduction to anime although when I watched it on TV in 1964 (I was twelve) I don't even think I realized it was from Japan. I was obsessed with Astroboy. He was my hero. There was something about that show that was different from every other cartoon, but I could never put my finger on what it was. I still like to play with the question. What is it about anime that sets it above American cartoons. How do you define its apeal? How is it that an adult can enjoy Pokemon or Hamtaro, but not Dragontales, or My little Pony? Who would a kid rather be: Amuro, or Hogarth? I have a lot of thoughts on this but I'm interested in what the rest of you think first.... JWM

I would say that traditional anime has more action and moving elements versus the US animation. For instance My Little Pony will use a standard background and make it static. Anime will add aciton in rivers, bugs, the sky, and even subtile face movements on main character.
Us animation has been ( in the past) like a 3 color poster. Anime is like a painting by the masters......
