just wondering what all you guys think of it? does the box of the robots really matter? i mean, its not the box you're collecting right? some people get so bent outta shape cuz the box is "messed up".... IMO, im not collecting the boxes, its whats inside that really counts.... its just nice that theres a box that comes with it~ to me, long as the toys is in good shape, the box can be as torn and i dont really care... so what are your thoughts on this?

I usually buy my bots loose, unless there is some killer artwork on a box, then I'll spend a bit more. I stack up the empty boxes to create a backdrop for the robots on display. The condition of the box is not a concern to me. Sometimes wear & tear adds to the ambiance of a curio cabinet full of badass vintage metal.

It depends. I LIKE boxes, but I find them a pain to store since I like to display my robots loose (otherwise, why have the robot? Just buy the box). Last time I moved, I ended up throwing out or selling just about all my boxes. It amazes me how much boxes matter to some people though.

;D I'm a box nut. IMO the boxes are important. real handy when you move. Put them back in their boxes instead of stuffing them all over each other. Besides, the box is easier to clean when it gets dusty (i display the boxes with the toys inside)

Modern boxes suck, and should go out with the trash. besides a lot of toys wont fit back in the box once assembled.
Vintage popy boxes though, are another matter entirely. Beautiful stuff - I've bought vintage popy I dont even like because of the beautiful boxes.

To me the boxes matter a quarter of how much the toys mean to me. The premium factor of boxes for me is the art and sheer funkiness. I have no problems with either the boxes for the old or new toys. I prefer styrofoam laid inside the box though. instead of the clear plastics used to keep the toys in place. It brings very good memories

If the box has styro in it then yes ;D If it is just thin plastic, then box will not matter ;D

See I like completeness in a toy and like to get all the catalogs and instructions. Boxes tend to guarantee that. Then I enjoy exceptional box art of old.
So IF the box art is poor and the toy is complete....WHO CARES? I find myself wanting to trash all of the Transformers Armada boxes................. But I like keeping all the old Popy and Bullmark boxes.

-back on the soap box- That reminds me of someting that REALLY goads me -- Star Wars and other figures windows. THEY AGE AND YELLOW. Crap happens from this mass-production method. GET OVER A YELLOWED DISPLAY BUBBLE! It has ALWAYS bothered me that one Star Wars figure with a perfect card and toy and bubble was worth $800, when the other with a damaged bubble was worth $400 W.t.F.?? HotWheels are the same way There is NO art in a bubble of plastic. They WILL age and yellow in time (and soon). It SHOULD be worth some money but not some crazy premium. The toy matters most.......

Well I think the other attraction to boxes is the nostalgia of it. Most boxes only matter to me if the art is extraordinary, but when I completed my Bionic Six figures, I got each one MOC and carefully cut the back of the cards so that I can display them on the cards when not using them. The cards are really unextraordinary. In fact, the art is terrible, but it reminds me of being in a toy store as a kid. I used to get so excited when I saw those boxes.

I sometimes catch those collector shows on cable. With most collectibles the box can make a huge difference in price. Years ago I got a Mazinga in the Shogun Warriors package, because I couldn't find one in the Popy box. The same packaging that looked cheap and crummy back then looks nostalgic and cool now. Like cars- that the same car that looks out of date when it's ten years old will look like a classic when its twenty. JWM

Boxes are cool if you have space for them. The problem is, some collectors do not have the space for keeping these boxes and they'd rather display what's inside than what's outside. So the only way to get rid of them is to trash them. If you have space then go on collecting boxes. I wonder how big is your collection if you have space for their boxes...you're probably a big time collector! ;D

Welcome to the BBS Archangel1925. What are your primary areas of toy collecting? Do you prefer old or new toys? -Ed Thanks Ed! I prefer new toys though I sometimes hunt old toys. I collect FUNimation, Toybiz, McFarlane, Art Asylum and Bandai toys. I'm a new collector so I don't have that much stuff. Anyway, I'm still young so I probably have more time to expand my collections. ;D

Do you buy new toys for the price or simply because you like the designs better ? I've always wondered if the older robot designs appeal to the old-school crowd but don't have an effect on younger collectors.
How old are you?

I tend to put a high value on the box due to the art/photographs. Sometimes I buy a toy just because the packaging is so appealing. However, I tend to only care for boxes for japanese toys. The art on the US versions generally sucks hard in my opinion.

Whoa! Not too young Ed, hehe, I'm 23. I prefer new toys because of their designs. I like super poseable figures, highly advance weapon accessories and detailed from head to toe. Honestly, I don't have that much interest with old robot toys but I find them very cool if you have lots of those stuffs in your display.

Two identical toys in identical condition.
Would you save $1000.00 by picking the one without a box?

Diecastjunkie, If it was a Japanese boxed Tetsujin 28 chogin--- I would say yes (Godaikin). That artwork is just out of this world to me as a big arsed fan. A few other DX Bullmark toys, yes. I consider the large box art almost like a poster. Vintage posters are worth big $$ so in my warped mind I could maybe justify the expense. (most of my higher end toys though were bough ages ago when the prices were reasonable). Otherwise NO.

In general I'd say I consider a good box a nice extra. For me completeness of the toy is the most important aspect. That said I'm talking from the perspective of someone who's only bought modern items so far. I think when I eventually take the step to spending out on vintage pieces, boxes will be a little more important. If you're going to lay down a lot of cash it's kind of nice to get the whole package.
Even so, to answer Diecastjunkie, I've yet to see a box I thought was worth $1000, so in that case I'd save the $1000 for more toys.
