Welcome to Robot "Box" Japan ;D ;D ;D ;D
Anyways currently I think SOC boxes are great even the Aoshima boxes, showing all that metal at the back, it really shows what you purchase, though you can't actually call it art since it is the Robot itself showing.
If your into models I guess Hasegawa got all the great box art ;D

Popy box art, old school-wise are the best for me.
As for modern toys, I love the SOC boxes.
For models, I love the box art for Gundam kits.

The best box art I've seen within the last 4 years would be the Hasegawa boxes for their Macross line. Specifically, the VF-1S Strike Valkyrie box.
Second would be the Yamato 1/48 box. Retro yet elegant. ;D

The rangers Black Gourajin Sempujin Set has an awesome cover photo, although sadly has no back.
The japanese armada prime, takatoku GBP-1s gifstet, takatoku SDF-1 (this one has 2 cover boxes for it!) and bandai VF-1s strike valkyrie (the back photo of the hangar diorama is quite nice).
The japanese zoids boxes also have nice photography as well. Oh, oh and the GD-45 2003 mecha godzilla.. man so many cool boxes in my opinion. heh

I would say the Perfect Grade Zeta Gundam. The Technical drawing on the big box is suitable for framing (if your wife or girlfriend would let you) JWM

For me one of the best boxarts is Golion DX Japanese boxart. The artwork on the left, right, top and bottom sides are all different! The bottom is the best, the text Golion with the lions flying inside the letters and the pilots standing just behind the Golion text. ;D I would say the Perfect Grade Zeta Gundam. The Technical drawing on the big box is suitable for framing (if your wife or girlfriend would let you) JWM
