Pretty much EVERYONE suggest to get the 1/48, cuz'they are the BEST. No part-swappin', excellent paint job, etc etc. I just might have to pick one up, or wait for the 1/48 GBP...gurgle.
Live in New York City, baby! Okay, halfway dead from the flight, and tired from staying up for a straight day (24 hours) , and doubtful I'll get any sleep...but ALIVE! WhOOOOO!

Well for my two cents worth, stay away from Toynami valks. Compared to the Yamato or Bandai valks the Toynami ones are way below par if you ask me. Quality is just not as great. I bought two of the Alphas (the red & blue) and I gotta tell you I am really dissapointed. I might buy the shadow fighter but only because they are the only ones who are making it right now. But my first recommendation would be the 1/48 Yamato valks, I'm sure you will love those.

Pretty much what everyone said.
The 1/48's from Yamato rule the Macross skies.
Get one, then get a FAST Pack set to beef your 1/48 up, and you're ready to shoot down some Zentraedi scum!!!

Get a bandai Reissue Valk if you like TOYS, not display pieces.

Whoops...Josh brung (is that a word?) up a good point, the 1/55s have totally lived up to the name of chunky monkey...like a sentai robot, sturdy and limited poseability, but still really work...

I second that.

Let's not forget that chunky-monkey is the basis for Transformers G1 Jetfire... (who had a few modifications and new paint). But still - it's old-school good and quite simply: they don't make'em like they used to. The reissues from Bandai really take you back.
Now - you want it to look damn good? A big-@$$ hunk of plastic that'll impress when you have it on the display shelf? That's the Yamato 1/48 scale. It's huge, and looks friggin awesome in fighter-mode (you wouldn't even know it turns into a robot). And the transformation is toy ingenuity - no "part-swaps" everything stays connected with everything else... but very complex - I don't play with mine very often.

Which ones are diecast? Yamato or Bandai?

Bandai's oldies had SOME die-cast internally but it was mostly plastic (however, let it not be said that the chunky-monkey was light, this thing was heavy). Yamato's huge 1/48 has almost zero die-cast (I think only the undercarriage has some metal in it). But Yamato's 1/60 does have a lot of die-cast - mostly legs and whatnot - a mix of plastic panels and metal bits. I would hardly call it a "die-cast toy." It's not SoC if you know what I mean.

This is a great thread! And an even better web site!! Like lots of you, I'm trying to re-live my past through Robotech/Macross and Godaikin. I've got a couple of questions for the experts:
I'm trying to dress up my 1/55 Takatoku Skull leader. Will the Toynami Masterpiece armor fit on the old Takatoku models? I know the wing attachments won't, but will the rest of the armor?
Are the re-issue Bandai Valkyrie's modified in any way compared to the old Takatoku models?

IIRC - the chunky-monkey reissue has a very slightly remolded nose-cone. But it's hard to say - I believe there were a couple of different nose-cones in the originals. I know for sure that Transformers Jetfire had a fatter nose-cone than the reissue's. I'm also told that there are a few variant heads (mostly the way the head-lasers were assembled). These changes are most noticeable on the VF-1S, of course.
Oh - and the reissues don't have decals - all the markings are tampo-screened onto the toy (looks great, IMHO).
As for the Toynami armours - no, they wouldn't fit. The proportions are all wrong. I suppose if you were handy with a Dremel or something, you could mod your Bandai to fit the Toynami stuff but...
PS: welcome to the boards!

@ Ben- Thanks for the warm welcome, and the tip to make the armor fit. I'm too handy with a dremel, and I fear that the plastic may be too thin to shave down.
@ All - does anyone know a cheap alternative to getting any armor to fit the old Takatoku Valks? I'm thinking of purchasing a jetifire accessory kit(ebay) for miriya that would work. As for skull leader though, is there a TW/Korea made valk that has similar accessories? If worse comes to worse, I'm going to have to break down and purchase a Super Valkyrie re-issue on ebay.

Are there any transformation problems associated with the Valks?

Are there any transformation problems associated with the Valks? The 1/55's (Bandai and Toynami) are no brainers. The 1/48's require a little finesse, but otherwise easy to transform. The 1/60's need some care, particularly with the tab that locks the fuselage with the chestplate in fighter mode. The diecast legs are also prone to chipping. And to those saying that the 1/48's are display pieces, I beg to differ. The 1/48's are as playable as the 1/55's. You just need to take them out of their boxes/display cabinets, and actually play with them.

Ever since I sold all my Toynami Valks I've regretted it. I don't want to get a Toynami version again but I have been thinking about getting a 1/48 Yamato. The problem is I just want to get one, VF-1S, but those things are priced way too high, so I might get either a Max or Miria Super VF-1J I have seen these things sell for as low as $129.00.

So the Max and the Miria are good to get?
