Our first annual unofficially “official” RJAs (Robot Japan Awards) 2006 were a fun success! The total number of members who voted came in at 79, which I felt was a great turnout, being our first year for the RJAs.
So, let’s get to the good stuff. First things first, here is the list with the final point results!

This has been a prolific year for robots and arguably the best overall year for collecting new robots in the past twenty years. The RJA 2006 voting list is impressive, with a broad range of unique designs, high quality and craftsmanship, and almost certainly something to offer to any collector’s tastes. No matter what you look for in your robot collection, 2006 had it.
Although the retro popularity and quality of the classic SOC designs dominated the votes, Fewture’s contributions were the big news of 2006, not only for collectors, but as a surprise to the industry in general. Coming from relative obscurity, Fewture rocketed onto the gohkin scene with the Getter EX series, and all three of the Getters we put on the voting list made it into the top ten.
But this year it was Voltes that everybody wanted and it was Voltes we got. 2006 really was the year of the SOC Voltes, and for the most part it held up to expectations with solid construction, smooth gattai action, nice articulation, and cool gimmicks. The SOC Voltes is a beautiful piece and a fan favorite of robot enthusiasts’ world wide.
All of the robots on the voting list are excellent in their craftsmanship and attention to detail that strived to meet with collector’s demands, but one issue that has become a more noticeable problem this year were the high prices and the large number of different robots being produced. It was a tough year for collectors to have to make the decision of what to buy and what not to buy. This has been the first year since I can remember where I was faced with this kind of buying dilemma for new robots. In years past it seemed there was maybe two or three “must have” robots, but this year felt as if there was one “must have” robot after another, and without enough time to catch up. In fact I would argue that the majority of robots on this years list could be considered as “must haves”. Hence we face the double edge sword of being a collector in an absolutely fantastic time to be collecting!
Thanks to everyone who voted, and all the members of Robot-Japan in general. I'm sorry that I never got to the action figure vote, but with the holidays and being engaged I didn't have time to put it together.
Everyone please feel free to elaborate on this year’s RJAs or your personal favorite robots from 2006!
