These came out a while ago - I remember for a little while almost EVERY on-line retailer who was starting out had these in stock. I think Yamato USA was offering them and that's why they were so common in North America (it was one of the few modern gokin toys available). It's kind of a cult favourite - Giant Robo fans got them (there was another version without the transforming "backpack-bazooka") and they raved about them. They can probably still be found floating around some anime-toy stores...

That’s the best valued gokin you can ever dream of. It’s very comparable to aoshima in terms of its built and die-cast content yet it cost me a mere $20US including shipping. However, now that the secret is somewhat out to most collectors its price is slowly creeping up. I should’ve gotten a missile version as well.
Heck, its beyond me how retailers can price the Zoemeyer & Ideon, which were entirely made of PVC higher than this die-cast filled bad boy.
I guess no one really wanted Giant Robot so it had to go on clearance.
Its anime sucks though

but whay is the anime serie? The name of the series is Giant Robo, the figure you showed was from the seven part OVA series from a few years back which was a re-make of the live action show from the late 60's.

It came out at a time when "modern robots" like Macross Plus was hot and "super-robot" nostalgia had not quite kicked in yet (about 5 years before Soul of Chogokin appeared). Also there were production delays worthy of Hollywood studios: the final volume did not come out for years after the second last one was released, etc... But those who liked it loved it faithfully - everyone else just lost patience and gave up on it, if you know what I mean. but whay is the anime serie? The name of the series is Giant Robo, the figure you showed was from the seven part OVA series from a few years back which was a re-make of the live action show from the late 60's. Specifically - the OVA is known as "Giant Robo: The Night the Earth Stood Still." A few years? Can you believe it's been more than a decade already?! Wow!

I don’t know Giant robo just didn’t do it for me. I couldn’t get pass the robot having a mind of its own [sort of] and at the same time taking verbal instructions from some snot nosed kid with nerdy short pants clinging to robo’s face ladder. On top of that I wasn’t nostalgic about it I’ve never seen it prior to the OVA. I just felt that the storyline, was too modern for giant robo’s aesthetic design. It just really didn’t work for me. Its like watching Mazinger Z in the gundam universe Great gokin toy though, can’t go wrong with that purchase

...and partially the focus on the OVA was mostly on the characters. the characters (called experts) have powers too like super strenght, speed, flight, teleportation, magic, and immortality . the story is connected with tetsujin i think. more info here... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Robothe toy by yamato is ok. it is heavy with diecast, with some vinyl parts. the articulation is great too. mine is the missle ver, there is also a bazooka ver

The OVA is very good, but you cannot realise that at the beginning. The end is the best. You simply can't imagine this would end like that. ;D There's also 3 spin-off OVAs, three 30-minute videos, all of them starring GinRei. The plots and situations of these episodes are more comedy-oriented and tongue-in-cheek than the original series. These videos are: - Barefoot GinRei Episode.1 Find the stolen Chinese Dress!! (1994) - Steel-Armed Ginrei Episode.23 Forbidden Fruit ~ War in Heaven!! (1995) - GinRei with Blue Eyes (1995) The second one is more about robots. If you can get these OVA (and i know you can ;D) and are fans of Giant Robo, you'll have fun. Concerning the Yamato Giant Robo, IT IS SOOOOOO COOL !! ;D Check my collection to see a big picture.

How many people here have that Giant Robo ? I don't see him often in the collections. I do ;D What kind of price did Giant Robo originally retail at when it was released? I'm guessing Yamato got a little burned with this guy but I'd love to see them release more robots of this size/quality

What kind of price did Giant Robo originally retail at when it was released? It was priced for about 50$-60$ in Europe... but i've heard of lesser prices in USA. I'd love to see them release more robots of this size/quality Me too ! I've sent en email to Yamato a few month ago to say i love their Giant Robo and would love to see more die cast robots made by them... no answer, but maybe every fan should do the same

I like the toy to an extend. I got the Missile version. Its heavy, and even have a couple ratchet joints. Though the ratchet incriments aren't very precise, and posing is not that dynamic. My gripes are mainly the missiles not attaching firmly at some slots, the head keeps tilting up instead of looking straight, and the back booster kind of wobbly. But for US$25, its one of the best bang for the buck in my collection regardless. This thing does look great with SOC Tetsujin 28 and the Bandai Big O figure side by side. The 'Rivets Trio' On the other hand, I love the anime quite a bit more than the toy. While I still have a hard time identifying with Daisaku character and Giant Robo's role (cool & ass kicking, its still just a nuclear powered robot, but everybody treat it as the saviour of the world), the rest of the cast is awesome, with very interesting and memorable characters with tons of cool action. Love the 'Chinese' touch to it too. A very fun series. And just like the toy, I saw the entire box set at best buy selling for $20... when it used to cost me $80 to import the Korean version a few years back. Guess Giant Robo isn't that hot nowadays.

If anyone is interested, HLJ does have the Bazooka version in stock for about $60. I picked up both versions when all the toy shops were clearing them out a few years back. Got one for $10 shipped (cost them that much to ship it since it is so heavy). The other was $25. In terms of diecast, this is easily one of the best values even at $60. It feels like a brick when you hold it. LZ If you are interested in it, don't hesitate, you wont regret it.
