Hi Guys, how do I thin down Gunze sangyo "Gundam Color" paint?? My hobby store is not much of help as they only carry the water based type.
i thought all Gunze Sangyo paint was water-based??
Ive tracked down online that yu need isopropynol..but whats an alternative to that?? Surely theres a household product thats equivalent??
Also, I am using the Mr Surfacer 500. Its great as a paintable putty!! But same thing, I dont know how to dilute it.
Ive tried Methylated spirits, all it does it make it into clumps :-(
somebody help please?

Isopropynal is common rubbing alcohol. It is sold in 70% and 90+% concentration. Use the 90% JWM

Gunze also makes lacquer paint...which I believe is what they use in those Gundam Color kits. Rubbing alcohol will not work with this, you need to use lacquer thinner. Gunze has its own brand of thinner...I think it's called Mr. Thinner. If you've never used it before, I'd take care using lacquer paints, as they're much harsher than acrylics. Use in a well ventilated area, and consider using a respirator.
The Mr. Color Aquaeous is the acrylic based Gunze paint, which you can thin with alcohol. Same with the Tamiya acrylics (which I use, and have had great success with).

mmm. thanks guys for the tips. Further investigations locally also led me to the use of acetone??
OK. the bottle dosent actually says "Gunze Sangyo" on it anywhere. However, it has "Mr.Hobby", "Mr Color" and "Gundam Color" on it. The colour code is "CGXX" ie CG45 or CG60 etc etc
They all come with white caps and glass jars..
so are these the ones that are lacquer based?

You know, I've never used lacquer paints, so I can't definitively say what you can and can't use for thinner.
I've looked around a bit online, and haven't found anything about using acetone as thinner for Mr. Color.
You do need to realize that you're dealing with toxic materials. You also need to consider that with the increasing 'harshness' of the paint, you're increasing the likelihood that the paint, thinner, or combination thereof will eat through or destroy the styrene model.
You may want to experiment on an el cheapo wing or g gundam 1/144 to see what happens before you paint anything good.

well, thought I'd report back. Yes folks. Acetone is the stuff you need to thin down the gundam colour set of paints..or any lacquer based paint. But you must use 100% acetone, anything else just wont mix. However, take care when using it, this stuff is toxic as hell! The fumes have a 'weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" effect. I was so excited that it mixed with the paint, and forgot to wear a breathing mask. I only painted for half an hour, but my headache lasted for 2 days!! It was hard to find, but I managed to get some from a chemist.
