I would recommend a sprue cutter first. You can get a good one made by X-acto at a hobby store. I'd also look into a bottle of liquid model glue with a pin point dropper. Tamiya is a good brand of model paint. (I don't bother to paint mine. They look OK out of the box.) I'd also look into an ultra-fine marker pen to do panel lines. You can blacken in the tiny grooves, and clean off the excess with a tissue. What kit did you buy? And welcome to RJ JWM

JWM gave great beginner advice. He builds them the same way I do from what I can tell. I do paint some parts, but painting the main body is too difficult for a dumbass like me. Paint the seams, paint the weapons, paint important parts like eyes, etc... Bill

Well for starters on painting, get yourself some gundam markers. The tips are fine and not wide like you would find in some other hobby shops.
Always plan ahead before painting (or Marking). Look at the pic of the completed model on the box, they are usually shown painted. It's best to paint the parts while they are still on the tree. Primers is fine but will take more time if you use it.

The main thing is to have fun and not have the project turn into a chore. The more models you build the better you will get at it, then you can even start to add airbrushing techniques to add shadow and effects. Also get a cutting pad since you don't want to slice up your mom's prized dinning table .

I use those pens architects use to draw, micron pens or something. Any way the smaller the pen tip the better for me. If it fits in the panel line I'm happy.

I think your refering to Rapidograph's, I got a set of six from Koh-I-Noor. They come in all sizes and are perfect for Gundam and Evangelion models.
