Sometimes I get in this mode where it feels like Bandai makes only what I expect, which isn't bad, but it feels a little predictable at times. Then by some random act of fate I come across something that really makes me sit up and say "@*#%$". So what does that mean? Usually it means that I can't live without it.
The Gun Phoenix Trigar is from the Ultraman Mobius (Mebius) Guys Machines series. I went on a search after having had so much fun with the Ultraman Nexus Machines, so I had to give Ultraman machines another go, and this was the fruits of labor. Holy mother of spaceships, this thing is a beauty, and a more serious piece in comparison to the other Ultraman machines I've come across. The Gun Phoenix Trigar is a combiner of three ships sold separately, being the Gun Booster, the Gun Loader, and the Gun Winger. Together the Gun Phoenix Trigar is big and fairly heavy. Combined it measures in at about 12.5 inches, or an average of six inches per ship (give or take an inch depending on the ship). There is substantial amounts of die cast in the Winger and the Loader ships, but the Booster ship has little if any. Although it would have been nice to have one huge die cast unit with all three ships, I don't feel the need to complain, because the comined fun factor and overall quality is high, and the cost seems minimal at $20-$25 per ship. Everything fits together tight and there is just enough moving parts on each ship to make them fun to tinker with. The metallic paint is beautiful and flawless. Personally I love the thing, but then I love most toys I buy, so take it as you will.
I don't really like doing extensive reviews, so feel free to ask questions.
Gun Phoenix Trigar combined.
Next is the individual ships and how they look freshly taken apart. From left to right we have the Gun Winger, the Gun Loader and the Gun Bomber.
Here are the ships together, but with their minor alterations into individual ships. Note the differences particularly on the Gun Loader.
Close ups of each ship. Gun Winger, Gun Loader and Gun Booster respectively.
This next line up of pics shows the fun little Gun Speeder that comes with each ship and inserts into the body of the ship to become the cockpit. The Gun Loader implements this feature the best with a release button that allows the Speeder to exit from the front and then re-enter through the hangar door in the rear, though it's a great feature for all of the ships as it really adds to the playability of each ship individually.
Die cast bottoms on the Gun Speeders, and with wheels!
Gun Phoenix Trigar
In my mind the Gun Phoenix Trigar is a classic toy. The construction is sturdy and heavy, and the yellow plastic wing parts are flexible so they won't easily break. Even though it's kind of expensive, this would be a great toy for kids because of it's simple and sturdy construction. It's a beautiful addition to the shelf.
