Im new to the bay area (just immigrated from Louisiana)....I was hoping that being on the west coast and in a large metropolitan area, i might find some shops that sold jumbos or import vinyl....so far no luck. Any suggestions? Im not really in the financial position to be purchasing any jumbos now (the move really sapped most of my resources)..but I love to photograph the robots as references for acrylic paintings and prints. Any collectors in the bay area out there that might consider letting me document their collection? Thanks for the help, Joel

From a holiday in LA and SF last year I'd really recommend you visit Kimono My House. It's a fantastic place for the toy addict even if you're just browsing.
Also visited Meltdown Comics which was good for modern toys.

Nippon Station in El Cerrito, just 411 it. In the same Asian mall there are actually two stores. Nippon Station and I forgot what the other one was called. Nippon Station has mostly models, some diecast, but very limited. The other place has mostly action figures videos and comics. Owner kind of makes you feel like you are bothering him. LOL
KMH, is ok, Yuki is the greatest seller, and his crew is perfect only thing is that he has limited stock and his prices are outrageous. Real nice people to talk to and hang out.
Hero's Club I have not been to.
Hobby Unlimited, pricey, workers can be a bunch of buttheads, you can tell they want your money but not your company.
Then there's this YesAnime that sells on eBay, at least on eBay they gouge on shipping. $25 to ship a 1/55 Valkyrie (chunky monkey) locally via USPS Priority mail.
SF China town has stores that may randomly sell SOC's. etc. but you have to check them out with hopes that one of them will have a few for sale.

I recently went to Hobby Unlimited in Burlingame (Close to my home), and I must say I was dissapointed. Not much stock, and VERY high prices. Worth stopping by if you are on the 101 near Burlingame, otherwise I'd skip it. Not much to look at there.

I've been to all of the places in the bay area mentioned. I like KMH for the eye candy--especially the Popy and Grip toys. Heroes Club has great displays of completed models. I've also checked out a few places in Chinatown. An additional store worth looking into is Precious Toys and Gifts in the Sunset/Parkside area on Taraval St. It's a small store stuffed to the brim (literally) with toys.

Another store in the heart of SF - the super7 store! From the same folks that brought you the magazine of the same name! Although we do not have a stunning selection of Jumbos, we do have an Italian Goldrake, Shogun Gaiking, Shogun Godzilla and a Uni-5 Garada K7 at the moment, plus more vintage vinyls and other japanese toys than you will find in any other shop! It is at 1630 Post St., San Francisco, in Japantown. 415.409.4700 www.super7store.com or www.super7magazine.com

I graduated from San Francisco State University recently, which means I no longer live in the city, but I can still tell you some places to go. Not only is Chinatown a great place to check (also lots of VCDs and DVDs of robot shows to get there), but Japantown is pretty good, too, over by the AMC Kabuki theater. They have a big mall thing, and right near the Kinokinuya (sp?) bookstore there's a little shop on the bottom floor with Mazinger in the window. Lots of cool stuff in there. They even have a Henshin Cyborg reissue that I desperately wanted, but couldn't afford, oh well.
If you go to San Jose there's a lot of stuff, too. San Jose's Japantown has two great shops, a toy store whose name I can't recall which usually has a ton of robot toys, some of them reasonably priced, and Nikkaku, which has a ton of anime books, manga, and toys. To get to Japantown in San Jose, take First Street and go left on Jackson. (Can't get that wrong... if you're going from the wrong direction it's impossible to turn on Jackson). You can actually get there with the light rail trains these days, though you couldn't when I lived in Sunnyvale. They've expanded, though.
Another pretty good store (though sometimes overpriced a tad) is Time Tunnel Toys on Bascom and Moorpark. It's right next to a comic shop named Space Cat, and it's a couple blocks down from Winchest Mystery House, the century theater, and a Toys "R" Us.
Speaking of Space Cat, if you're in Saratoga there's another one that's smaller across the street from the AMC Saratoga at the little mall, but they've been jerks to me at that store before, so your mileage may very.
There are actually a lot of comic shops around the bay area that sell robot toys, too. I grew up in Sunnyvale, and I bought my Unifive Jumbo Great Mazinger from R&K comics on El Camino (right by McDonald's, CD Warehouse, et cetera), and there's a pretty good comic shop called Comic Conspiracy on Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road and Fremont, directly across from Fremont High School (where I went to high school, yay). If you check out the yellow pages, you'll find there are a lot of comic shops in the bay area, and most of them have some level of robot toys.
I can't remember exactly, but I know there's on in Palo Alto that had decent selection... just look up comic stores in the yellow pages.
Also there are regular toy shows in the bay area, including the pretty good Collector's Quest, which was a much better toy buying experience than Botcon 2004 was for me. Bleh.
