We all know I love and crave crazy-ass jumbo bootlegs, but never before have I ever actually thought a bootleg was in fact superior to the toy it was knocking off. Until today when I finally received a Taiwanese "Disco" Giant Gorg. This guy has been around for quite awhile now, but oddly enough, I don't think I had ever seen pictures of it and the Takara version side by side. I had always liked the extra color stickers on the bootleg version but also always assumed that in person it was probably a really flimsy crummy toy, much like it's brother the Disco Daitetsujin 17, which imo looks much better in pictures than it really is (and it don't look that great in pictures, either). The quality on the Disco Gorg seems remarkably good though. The toy is noticably lighter than the original but it also has a lighter blue tone, the extra colorful (but not nearly as garish as the D17) stickers and best of all, the arms are posed closer to the body. It's not a huge difference, but I think it is an important one as the original was also something of a pain to fit in with other jumbos. The one area the Takara version is superior is the head, and not just because their's lights up either. It's hard plastic head and clear eyes give it a much sleeker robotic look that the bootleg lacks. However, the bootleg does have painted yellow eyes, much like 99% of the classic JMs out there. Both toys feature the exact same articulation at the shoulders, knees and neck.
It's interesting to note that the Disco D17 seems to have been made in far greater numbers than the Disco Gorg. The D17s are everywhere, but the Gorg's only show up once in a while. Perhaps the makers felt it was more important to crank out lots of the D17s since it is much harder to acquire a Popy D17 than a Takara Giant Gorg. In fact, it seems to actually be harder to get the bootleg Gorg than the original Gorg.
