P.S. It looks great. It almost reminds me of a super realistic aging effect....like its been to war in the past then was polished out

I already have all six variations of the mazinger. This one is my seventh. Some inspiration from gx-01rb.

did you disassemble it before painting or did you just masked it part by part?

I disassembled it totally and painted /stripped each piece separately. The torso paint is original, so I basically matched it with the arms and legs. The midsection was stripped using the dremel wire brush and no paint remover so it came out looking a little shinier and "brushed" looking.

hmmmm... interesting, is it hard to assemble it back? i mean with the joints mechanism and all?
i'm thinking of doing this to my daigokin, like my own special edition and sign the box and keep it in display lolz.... maybe if i really get bore over the summer hehehe

Even though it is simple, taking it apart sucks because some of the plastic pieces are pressed on so tight to the die cast. Also you run the risk of stripping the threads when you run the screws back in because the threads are designed so poorly. I'll post pictures of the process the next time I take it apart.

That sure looks Sweet! I like the brushed metallic look there.
Are those daigokins really Really REALLY fully die-cast?
If not, what's the ratio of the material (die-cast to plastic) on these figures?
Perhaps I may wanna buy a daigokin Mazinger someday.
Thanks!

I was actually looking into electroplating at one time and the actual process could be lenghty and cost a lot in chemical and supplies. For a real chrome finish you would have to plate the zinc with copper and then plate over the copper with chrome. My custom is currenly at a friends house getting accented with silver paint so I'll post more photos once I get it back.
Also, the new daigokin with scrander should be shipping at the end of March. I'd recommend butchering a new version rather than messing with your limited edition. You can maybe make a black version with a black scrander to go with it.

I love to customize figures, but in the case of a Daigokin Mazinger Z original color I would never ever mess with its paint job. In the case I was going to do some customizing, it would be in adding more articulation to the figure, so it would be more posable - kind of like an SOC. As a matter of fact, I did customize mi first edition Daigokin Mazinger as soon as I received it. I made the Jet Pilder removeable (yes, I can remove the Jet Pilder, just like the SOC Mazingers). However, I did not mess with anything else.
rayar, please don't be offended but I honestly do not like the way this black custom version came out so far. The black paint is not too bad, but I am definitely not digging the "brushed" look. To me it looks more like scratched metal than brushed. Hopefully the final version will sport a better finish. Again, that is just my humble opinion, and it is mine and only mine...
magengar, yes the Daigokin Mazinger Z is almost all metal. Only the "Glass" on the Jet Pilder is plastic, and a few connectors/washers in the joints (arms and legs). SO the ration of metal to plastic is about 97% metal to 3% plastic. By the way, neither the Great Mazinger or the Grendizer have plastic canopies on their respective cockpits (which is a shame), so their metal ratio is even higher.

No offense taken, But the brushed look is pretty much the byproduct of using a carbon dremel brush to take off the paint and not paint stripper. I pretty much freehanded the midsection with the wire wheel and did not realize how strong the brush was. If you notice, the bare arms and leg portions are darker because I removed the paint with stripper and lightly polished with a steel dremel wheel. My plan initially was to make those areas look like natural bare zinc. The midsection was the last thing I did. I'll post some revised pictures when I get it back. If I don't like it then I can strip it down again and repaint . By the way I would never mess with a daigokin either, but I got this one dirt cheap ad every part of the body except for the torso had paint bubbles. Funny you should mention about adding articulation, I was contemplating the same exact thing.

Wow! Almost all metal! I can only imagine the weight of those daigokins in my hands. If I had one, I'd have to Carefully stand it on the shelf as far back against a wall or a display-stand far back as possible, and at a low shelf tier. I'd have to have shag rugs on the floor beneath it in case it fell off the shelf.
I imagine these gokins would be more metal, and much heavier than my Yamato Giant Robo (bazooka version), huh...
Mmmmmmm.........Ziiiiiiiiiiiiinc!!! ;D
