Hello everyone,
I am new here in the discussion forum. I am curious to know if people here are satisfied with the old SOC Daiku Maryu Gaiking set? I was a little disappointed with the rather small version of Gaiking compared to the Popy original. It seems that Bandai cranked out various versions of Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger or Grendizer for SOC. Wouldn't it be great if Bandai can add a new larger DX version of Gaiking to the SOC line? I think people would grab them up quite quickly.

Ey!
Welcome to RJ Tosho Daimos!
I don't have the SOC Daikumaryu to make any comments, but I am disappointed that Bandai did not release Gaiking instead.
I do recall someone from another BBS telling me that Daikumaryu is the "more popular" part of the Gaiking cartoon in the 80's.

i got the black SOC Daiku Maryu Gaiking, and i am pretty satisfied with it. i didn't see the anime at all, just some stickers. the SOC black has lots of gold trim, and there are two sets of parts for the Gaiking robot (gold colored and metallic anime colors).
if you prefer another set, the last 2 sets of gashapon chogokin included replicas of the classic gaiking and the kargosaur chogokins.

I got one. Im preety impressed with mine. Yes the Gaiking is a little small...but remember, the Soul of Chogokin series aren't really meant for playing. Its meant to be displayed, admired and tease our past childhood memories. Also the star is really DaikuMaryu and not Gaiking. He is one hefty solid die-cast baby. Having said that, Gaiking himself takes a little patience to put together. The joints on the dragon's head (his mouth) is a little stiff when you first handle it. You have to wiggle the mouth into the right position so that it can be fitted as the torso of Gaiking properly. Otherwise it just wont all come together! If you are going to transform Gaiking together, be prepared to chip some precious paintwork where the joints meet. You can't help it when metal rubs against metal. They are hardly noticeable once Gaiking is complete...but your heart is crying. (well, mine was anyway ) Still, its pretty cool how you get 3 powermodes of Gaiking - Closed, Open and STRONG mode!! ;D Oh yeh, you also get the 3 tiny weeny little vehicles with it as well! These are about 1.5cm long!!! And another warning before I finish. DaikuMaryu's weapons are Sharp!!!!!

BTW. If I remember correctly from my childhood memories, DaikuMaryu is considered to some as the "star" of the show since it is the "mothership". If you think about it, Gaiking and the other vehicles come from the DaikuMaryu. Imagine yourself in 70's Japan anime world...Which one would you choose to fight the evils of the world? A giant, slow but powerful Dragon mothership? or a fast, nimble humanoid robot Its like comparing Macross and a VF-1!!

SDF-1 right? ...oooohhh ;D I loved seeing it transform in Macross and kicking arse....kind of like your Gaiking Base/ Kargasaur analogy.

Yes, Daiku Maryu is an awesome mother ship. Gaiking is still the cool robot that engages in front line battles. I agree SOC are designed display minded. But don't most collectors invest in expensive diecast robots (vintage or new) for display reason rather than playing them as regular toys? With various versions of the SOC super robots and side kick characters being produced, a larger SOC Gaiking would make super robot collection more complete. The miniature Gaiking alone standing next to its SOC cousins Great Mazinger, Getta 1, Grandizer etc. can be somewhat overlooked. The size does matter in this case. ;DPeople are likely to notice the larger robots first before they even notice the miniature. It's sort of like putting a three inch Shogun into a group of five inch robots and call them the same breed. It just looks out of place. Then again, maybe it's only me who feels this way.

Here's my attempt to make the SOC Gaiking from DaikuMaryu look Big! ;D ;D ;D ;D I too wish Bandai will release a SOC Gaiking..but think what sort of accessories he will have? Most SOC has a "special" accessory of some sort. Gaiking only has his cross to hold! I'd like to see them make DaikuMaryu's head transform in to Gaiking and also with the different modes of heads. Maybe they will include a diecast version of Badra, Ness and Skylar.

Man, you have fooled me for a second there! If you auction off your Gaiking using that photo on eBay, angry winner would probably kick your door down. But seriously, I think SOC's small version of Gaiking is on the right track in terms of changeable parts. Stealing the separation idea from the old Popy version would be good. Sort of like Getta Robo series in lesser extreme sort to speak. Gaiking's design is just too good to rely on weapons accessories. SOC Bossboro certainly doesn't come with whole lot of accesoires (If you can count his heads as accessories). One of the reasons which made Chogokins desirable is the innovative ideas designers come up with. The idea of including Badra, Ness and Skylar with Gaiking as a set is cool. SOC seems to be concentrating on modern robots lately, with the exception of upcoming Getta G. I hope they can also add more 70's Super Robots to their line. How about a Tosho Daimos to start off? ;D ;D ;D

if they made Gaiking into a 5 inch bot, we might end up with a 20 inch long Daikyumaryu SOC and it will cost $300!!

True, I do see Daiku Maryu's head is used for Gaiking's chest. Bandai made Gaiking of the set rather small based on dragon to robot ratio. Perhaps for economical feasibility too, but hey, SOP Space Battle Ship Yamato isn't exactly cheap either. My suggestion is to make an independent version of Gaiking concentrating on the robot alone in bigger or similar to the size of old Popy version. Fans can own both the Daiku Maryu Gaiking set and a special version of Gaiking to displayed next to other Super Robots. Bandai is already making different versions of each robot anyway, I don't see how another Gaiking can do harm.

I'm quite sure that Bandai will release a full size Gaiking.Bandai Has already re-released other SOC ,with GX 01R,GX 02R, SOC Grendizer DX, all the variant color versions ,and now the reissue of Combattler,so a new release of Gaiking is possible. Many people says Gaiking is not very popular in Japan.I don't think so.Mazinger and co. are surely more popular , but other companies, such as Marmit with the recent minimetal and his Gaiking of the line Fierce legend of super robot,Medicom with his action doll and so on, demonstrate that Gaiking ismore than alive, about industry of toys. So,I'm waiting...

I think SOC series features characters with newly designed modern engineering, as to GT series are basically reissues of vintage style Popy in smaller size. Bandai seems to have finally chosen GT as the series for future reissues. The company kept on playing with different sizes for reissues. There was the reissue of Reideen which was bigger than the Popy version. Then Bandai released Gashapon minis. Now we have GT series. Anyway, Bandai will milk as much profit as they can, just like they did with different variations of SOC characters. They sure are not in the rush to release other old favorites. We just have to keep our fingers crossed.

Onto another topic: Which other favorite characters would you like to see Bandai add to SOC?

;D Since the Getter G is coming by December (and I can't wait), and Voltes V [reportedly] is already set in stone as the next possible release, all that remains in my SOC wishlist are the following, in order of my favorite: - Danguard Ace: hopefully, it can merge from "satellizer [??]" mode to the robot mode and back. - Jeeg: he's too cool for accessories he he he he - Gunbuster: can gattai from Buster Machine 1 and 2 into Gunbuster. Maybe they can throw in a 1/5000 scale Buster Machine 3 too - Gaiking: I don't care if his only weapon is the cross daggers, me want! - Daimos: make this one as articulate as the EVA's so it can perform a high kick!!! Also, it's not really SOC, but a Gokin wishlist as well. I hope Miracle House will release: - Shin/Neo Getter 2 & 3 - Shin Dragun (from Armageddon) - Jin Getter (from Shin Vs. Neo) - Getter Dragun (Army version from Armageddon) - Texas Mac (with that bad@ss cannon of his)
