I was actually wondering if there were any differences between the popy version of something like voltes, combattler, tet28...etc and the godaikin version. I know the boxes differ, but to my untrained eye it looks just about the same content wise, can anyone verify that?
also, is there a particular reason why the popy boxed versions fetch at times what seems to be a sizeable price difference compared to its godaikin counterpart?
thanks for the lesson ;D

The only difference that I am aware of is the color of plastic used in the joints and some missiles on Combattler, and Voltes V. The slightly older Popy versions had yellow joints. The Godaikins have red joints. The Godaikins were for the most part, Popy toys repackaged for the American market.

I thought I heard that Dairugger XV only came with a sword in the Chogokin version. I could be wrong, though.

We could be getting into serious joint trivia Both of my figures are the five-box versions, and they have the yellow ones. Maybe that's the diff' the cheaper five-box versions got yellow? JWM

I'll try to tell you guys as much info as i know.. The yellow elbow came only from the first batches of Voltes V, the yellow elbow was brittle and broke easily. Its NOT leftover parts from Combattler DX as what others assume. Only the first few batches of Voltes V DX from 1977 comes with yellow elbows. As far as i know, 1978 versions never had yellow elbow. Here are some info from my unpublish webpage about voltes v variants and the main difference from Popy and Godaikin versions of Voltes V. These differences also applies to other Gokins that had Godaikin versions. "Plastic color - The blue plastic parts of the Popy Voltes V DX differs from that of the Godaikin version. The Godaikin version has a sparkling green-blue finish that gives a sparkling silver dust appearance when viewed at an angle. This color is also found on other Godaikin robots like Daimos. The Popy Voltes V comes in a navy blue color. Paint: There is a perception that the Popy Voltes V DX comes with darker paint job compared toe the Godaikin Voltes V. It is common to see Popy Voltes V DX robots with lighter blue paint job. There are also some Godaikins with darker blue paint job. We will never know if this is due to age or climate change. So it can be concluded that majority of Popy Voltes V DX has darker paint and majority of Godaikin Voltes V has light blue paint. It is also uncommon to see the left or right side of either the left or right legs (from Volt Frigate) to have unmatched color. There are 2 parts which has paint variations between the Popy Voltes V DX and the Godaikin Voltes V. The left and right sides on the hips on Voltes V (beside the cockpit of Volt Frigate) is all painted white in the Godaikin version compared to the Popy Voltes DX. The blue section just above the wheels of the Volt Lander also differs between the Popy Voltes V and the Godaikin version. Godaikin has a dark blue finish while the Popy Voltes V DX has a lighter blue finish. Stickers: The Godaikin Voltes V only comes with one style of stickers. The main difference of the stickers for the Godaikin against the Popy DX is that the Godaikin has a metallic sticker finish and has a very glossy coated finish which makes it very durable. The glossy stickers reminds me of the re-seal sticker tabs found in packs of Hershey Bites and Dole Raisin packs. The Popy stickers are more of like regular paper stickers that can be easily damaged or removed. Here are photos of all the stickers I have seen so far." - Malvin Lim www.greattoys.netWe could be getting into serious joint trivia Both of my figures are the five-box versions, and they have the yellow ones. The 15" Dairugger DX (Voltron Matchbox) that was released both in US and Japan never had Chogokin parts. The only DX Dairugger that had diecast parts is the small 7 inch figure that came in a maroon box. As what i know, the sword was not released as part of the Voltron Matchbox because it was a sharp object.. the same issue happened with Voltron II and III. - Malvin I thought I heard that Dairugger XV only came with a sword in the Chogokin version. I could be wrong, though.
