I'm not too familiar with the Great Mazinger series; why is he often depicted in figures with his index finger pointing?

I'm not too familiar with the Great Mazinger series; why is he often depicted in figures with his index finger pointing? That's for his Thunder Break attack, the lightning hits his index finger then it travels to his horns on the side of his head. I guess he stores the energy there because it then goes from his horns back to his index finger and to whatever he's pointing at, mostly some bad guy who gets cooked pretty good
