Hey guys, I won an ebay lot the other day that included some vintage 3.5" chogokin toys I've never seen before. I first assumed they were the new reissues, but these guys are old, and far less detailed. The markings on the back say "Japan" and nothing else. Were these cheesy knock offs, or something else? Oh, and who's the silver guy with the purple head? I dig Chogokin, but know so little about it...

They're mini Shogun Warriors released in the States by Mattel around the same time they put out the regular 5" Shoguns (hand picked from Popy's lineup). You can read up on them on Wildtoys' site: The silver and purple gentleman is Shogun Warrior Raider (aka Popy GA-11 Getta Raiga/Liger) The Mini Shoguns are more or less in scale with Bandai's The Chogokin Line: (The round glared out sticker on Combattler's box is Toei Overseas.)

Thanks, JB.
I'm actually amazed to hear that they were official releases. The quality is really lacking. MY Poseidon has no face, for example. Just a red bucket head with no details.
Were these guys ever released in Japan? I'm curious why they'd have the "Japan" inscription if they were produced solely by an American company.

shax, the mini shoguns in your lot have received a beating worthy of a red-headed step-child: Poseidon is missing face stickers and shoulder missiles, Combattra is missing his antennae, Dragon is missing head spikes and Gaiking is missing his horns and a leg. As far as I know, the Mini Shoguns were only released in the states, sometimes under the title Mini Godaikins. They're pretty remarkable for their age; Gaiking is probably the best mini Shogun.

Thanks to the generosity of jryu, I now have two of these- the Gaiking, and Mazinger ;D ;D. They're the first old toys in my collection that have real wear on them. Maz. lacks the breastplates, and Gaiking is missing the wings. They're both banged up a bit, but oddly enough it actually adds to the charm. JB: there's a 3.5" VoltesV at one of those shops in Anaheim across the street from Len & Kathy's. It was either at Phat or the one next door. $8 and charmingly thrashed. JWM

Glad you liked them man. As for the Gaiking, the 3.5" one didn't have the wings, only the 5" one. I wish the small one had wings. Hrmm. Come to think of it I wish I had the 5" version too. j*ryu Thanks to the generosity of jryu, I now have two of these- the Gaiking, and Mazinger ;D ;D. They were released in japan in limited numbers after the US release. I've seen them on popy cards.
Very rare though.
They were also released as Mini-godaikin later on in the early 80s, with added stickers on them.

I was aware that various parts were broken off and missing (I don't mind), but I'd assumed that Poseidon's face was painted on (much like the larger version). A sticker, you say? Guess I'll have to paint my own

Interesting Josh. So the U.S. actually got the toys first and THEN Japan.
That explains why they aren't as exacting as most Popy toys.
I've never seen them on a Popy card/box.
