I got the Com-battler in the 70's in 5 separate boxes. Now I'm trying to determine if it is Godaikin or Mattel. Please help, Jim

The five-box combattler would be a Popy issue (pre-Godaikin). I don't think Mattel ever issued the DX Combattler in the Shogun line, although they did issue the ST (smaller) Combattler in a Shogun Box. Are the boxes all in Japanese? Are the elbow joints yellow or red? JWM

I don't have the boxes & the joints are yellow but I just found a Mattel example with yellow joints on ebay, item #5960632160, good photos.

Ah! auction closed. Wow. I had never seen that box before. Without the boxes it would be impossible to tell. If the elbow joints are yellow it's slightly older than the Godaikin issue from the early '80s which have red elbow joints. It' a hugely desirable piece at any rate. JWM

I wonder if the Mattel ones say Mattel & have the PA-78 through Pa-82.

None of them has a Mattel stamp. All Mattel did was re-package the Popy toys, although I know that some of the later Shogun Warriors issues came with "safety missiles". And even the all Japanese boxed Popy toys have English on some of the stickers. Do you have all the missiles and little parts that came with it? JWM

Jim, if your Combattler came in 5 separate boxes then it is, without a doubt, a Popy release. Neither Godaikin nor Mattel ever sold the stages separately.

I used to have the Battle Tank under the Shogun Warriors line.

Ah, the plot thickens and we are all getting a bit of history on Combattler. Jims, thanks for that link! What amazes me about seeing those pictures is that I was regularly prowling toy stores in the late 70's when the Shoguns first hit the market. I bought my five-box Popy Combattler set brand new. The only Shoguns I remember seeing in die-cast were some of the 5-6" ST figures like Gaiking, Maz, Getter G, and Raideen. Oh, and the small Daikumaryu aka Kargosaur. I had no idea how much stuff was actually sold in the Shogun packaging. Once again, the toy is the same regardless of the box. JWM

Umm...I just want to clarify something..when I made this bold statement I had just polished off my second Martini; probably not the best time to put your thoughts onto a keyboard. With that being said, I knew that Mattel did release the DX Combattra set, but I didn't know they also released the separate ships under their Shogun line. jwm did mention that the original 5" Shogun Warriors were released in different versions. For example, the 1st version of Shogun Poseidon is basically the same as Popy GA-12. Mattel's 2nd version of Poseidon did not allow the missile launchers to rotate from back to shoulders, the bottom halves of the legs did not fold to tank treads, the neck ring was red, instead of chrome and the black "v" sticker below the beltline was missing. Mattel's 3rd version is like the 2nd version but has the "v" painted red and adds insult to inury by introducing the dopey safety missiles. So I wonder if the Mattel DX Combattra and it's separate selling modules were tweaked a bit for their U.S. release. Jim, your question may lead to a 3rd Martini, as this topic obviously requires more research.

As far as I know, the Combattler ST was never issued under the Shogun Warriors line. The DX was issued in one box, as shown in the ebay link, and in five separate boxes. These individual boxes come up on ebay all the time.
I don't know differences between the Japanese issues and the US ones, though.

combattra DX was released in 5 boxes and in one box with separate styrofoams inside by mattel. Not the same for the ST size I think that the difference between yellow and red joints is only for the DX voltes V. For combattra are always yellow (combine box, 5 boxes japan, godaikin, bandai america window box and mattel both 2 versions) I think differences are only about the sticks (in front) the color of the mouth (grey or white) and the different blue and red color of the robot. You can look the difference fo the head sticks and the mouth on the green arrow graffiti at pag 16

All i know is that the Combattra DX (Shogun W.) is identical to the 1st Jp of Combattler V DX
both have dark blue plastic joint and different stickers...
the later Comb in Godaiking box as well as some some Jp combattler DX are 2nd versions
