Dude Welcome! 36 here and I watched Taekwon V in Aussie when I was a 12 year old in about 82 I think it was. I can't recall either Mazinger on Aus TV but I did religiously watch: #Kimba the White Lion #Speed Racer #Batfink #Battle of the Planets (from about 1981 onwards) #Gigantor #Thunderbirds and just about every Gerry Anderson sci-fi themed series ever made including Space 1999. #Astroboy black and white around 1973-1975 + later Astroboy color around 1982 # Doctor Who- Pertwee and Baker (John Pertwee is my all time favorite actor).
By the time I was 6 years old I had seen Kubricks 2001 a Space Odyssey about 6 times at the movies!!
You'll find these boards are quite dynamic- get some good thought provoking conversations going and some cool artwork and reviews.
Catch ya round Alex in Seoul

Hey, There's quite a story required to answer this question. Basically, when Taekwon V was originally aired in 76, the average South Korean couldn't afford big toys. What Taekwon V stuff that was around from that era is small and nasty. When Taekwon V was remade into a light blue color robot with wings in 1984 the toys got bigger. You can find a 15cm sized robo from that period for about 40,000-50,000 Korean Won. When Taekwon was remade as Taekwon V 90 there was a big sized box set released. The Taekwon V in that set is about 32cm tall but has attachmants all over it. About 4 guys on this site have it and I've got it but man, the price jumped up from about $40 around 5 years ago to about $220 today. Taekwon V has become a symbol to Koreans and that's caused his price to jump up considerably. You can still get a big 52cm jumbo sized vinyl for about $110 retail- if it was made in Korea it would be far more popular than it is. I've got about 7 model kits of Taekwon V from about 4 different eras. They range from $4 to about $50 on auction sites. I've also got a Taekwon V from 1984 that is about 9cm tall and currently sells for about $130 on auction Korea- I bought it for $70 18 months ago. The real golden Taekwon items are the posters...I've been hoarding old Kor anime posters for 3 years now. Prices range from $70 - $450 There's a jumbo Machinder God Sigma body with a Taekwon V head that's been unearthed only over the last year or so- I'm guesstimating about a $700 tag- but hey, there are only 2 that are known to exist. There's a guy selling a 1984 Taekwon V that's about 15cm tall and he claims that the box has been signed by Kim Chung-Ki (the creator of Taekwon V). The dude is asking $110 for it but, you can never really know if you're really getting a genuine signature...so I'd avoid it. If you want to see it go to www.leebus.com then go the 5th button along on the blue tool bar. Then click the post 6095 - you'll see by the replies that there's a debate going as to its authenticity. Here's an article about Kim Chung-Ki from December... times.hankooki.com/lpage/culture/200412/kt2004121518143311700.htm There's also some good images of Taekwon V at the club site www.gotaekwonv.wo.to/Sounds like your dad was stationed at Yongsan or Kunsan then Okinawa Talk later Alex

Thank you and yes we were stationed there. And wow you are right that toy is hard to find. That was one of the reasons I begged my parents to let me take TaeKwondo in Korea LOL. After 30 years of training I have my 4th Dan Black belt I am now taking boxing for super hands to go with my super kicks.

Howdy Eric, welcome aboard ;D
I am 34 and grew up with Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, The Space Giants, Ultraman, etc. I don't ever recall watching any Mazinger stuff, but I did have most of the Shogun Warrior jumbos when I was little (Mazinga, Raideen, Daimos, Godzilla, and Gaiking).
This is a great site with some real cool folks here.
