Hi, I'm new to the board and i have a few questions. I have a good sized godaikin collectioon and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to appraise their worth. Obviously, they have more value to me than money in that they are by far the coolest toys on the planet, but I'm curious. the only way i've found is to hunt them down on e-bay and compare prices and conditions to what i own. i just wonder if there exists some comprehensive price list somewhere like they have for, say, mcfarlane toys and the like. Anyway, thanx. Big-up the Godaikin Tetsujin is my boy!!

Also, can anyone send me to an explanation of the condition grading scale you use on this site? Thanx again

Welcome to R-J, Megadestrukto. I have never seen anything like a comprehensive price list for Japanese toys. Checking e-bay, Yahoo Japan, and Rinkya could be a full time job, and prices fluctuate, and vary with the condition of the toy. Most people grade toys on a scale of 1-10, with C-10 meaning perfect, mint in sealed box and C-1 being totally thrashed. JWM

yes! for godaikin pieces I think e-bay is the really truth of tha value about your toys in a particular moment. On yahoo japan I've seen a few godaikin pieces and always at incredible prices!!! don't know why! ;-))

One of the rules of thumb that I see reflected in sales of Chogokin figures is that if they are loose (not in the original packaging) then they are devalued tremendously. Since I like to play with my toys I am reluctant to spend too much merely to be the first to touch something. If all the accessories are there and they are all in excellent condition then I am happy. I don't offer them for sale so it is not a problem for me but I do buy used and new figures so it is important.

I agree! I play everyday with my toys... so I buy always c-7/8 toys in c-7/8 boxes.... good play with, no desperate for leaving toy from the styrofoam and.... 50% off !!! wow!!! ;-)))

I remember watching one of those collectors' shows on cable TV. They had a spot on a guy who had the world's most valuable toy collection or some such thing. He never saved the boxes. He made a point of saying something to the effect that boxes were what he gave to other collectors. I myself prefer boxed pieces, but after all- it's the toy, not the box that we collect. JWM

Thanks a lot for all the info. I guess this summer when I have time I'll get them all together and spend a day on the computer. Maybe I'll even try some of the photography tricks I've seen elswhere on this site.

No doubt, the box is important (and those are nice boxes). People collect anything under the sun and I am sure that there is a market for old, vintage, good condition boxes. The box should match the toy in condition. I just bought an unopened Dragun from 1977. The box looks like it was just printed. I bought it for the figure inside and that is all I paid for it. The person who sold it to me (online) never mentioned that it was unopened and Mint in the sealed box. Since I have several of these same figures I am not too anxious to take him out. Dragun displays well no matter where he is, in the box or out.

it depends of what you expect from old toys, some who never open their boxes sure could have surprises the day they will...

In jpn, mint items are considered to be worth alot more simply because well... many japanese collectors are alot more anal than u.S collectors in terms of box condition. Their take is that it has to look like it is a brand new item and conveys the sense for the collector when they open up the box it is for the first time.

I have a pal who will try to get a good loose version and a MIB version of the same item, that way he can leave the one on display and one still mint in box. Seems a bit too much to me but I suppose if he can afford it who am I to argue.

N. R. F. B.
never remove from box ;D , have you seen dexter´s lab what happens in a star check convention. maybe in a chogokin convention it can happen. ;D
anyway i am from the same idea that a boxed and maybe -but not so important- unopened toy makes look your collection just sweeet, but when you want to display your invest, well, yes i think twice.

Japanese toy boxes are works of art.I will only collect boxed toys mint or near mint,to me theyre half the fun.I own alot of toys in import boxes just because I cant see paying hundreds extra for a certain box. But,I'd rather have the original box.The import boxes never have all the cool graphics and character art.Just compare the Godaikins,Each Japanese box singular and unique, all the American boxes identical.Whats more fun?The japanese have an incredible graphic art tradition, and all that kana looks so cool.
