I've said it before, some of the parts look suspiciously like the super-poseable MACROSS valks they cam out with 2003? 2004? 2005?
I *pray* they use some decent plastic, but for $20, probably not...

I'm also hoping for something better than soft gashapon PVC material.

Already got the con exclusive at AX. the plastic is similar to Banpresto. not bad for the sculpting but the head and feet need to be reworked. the neck is too long. and the feet do not retract like the 1/48 so they stick out a lot and makes the tailpack assembly look small and making fighter mode look odd.
The battroid mode display attachment is not that great. is attaches to the backpack hinge and is only hanging on by a mm or so.
The wings CANNOT be folded completely in fighter mode due to the designe of the shoudler pieces when the arms are tucked under. if you force the wings to fold, the back plate will pop open and the wings fall out.
the hip swing bar is precarious. there is no solid locking system or any locking system so you rely on friction to keep it in place. aslo the neck is held on a hinge by a large neck pin and sticks out like a sore thumb.
I discussed these design flaws with teh designer at Toynami and he is taking them to heart. Now I realize that there are issues that canot be mended due to requiring an entire new modl change. but the biggest thing is NO 3D skull on the heat shield. it is hideous.

Solscud is spot on in his review. I think these could be good with a few minor adjustments.
Still, for a $20 valk, it's not bad. It just could be improved.

i think a better bet is to buy Banpresto's product. you can find them at $10-20 tops a piece. No stand, but then again, you're not giving money to Toynami who seems to delay product with no real positive result, cares nothing about QC, and won't listen to what their fans REALLY want (beta beta tred tred)

How good/bad is the Banpresto version? What scale is it? What are these Banpresto Valks constructed of (PVC?)?

Well, the banpresto is not bad.. has nice articulation, and can transform (but you have to take the hands off). However it's not very stable, a little floppy... has SOME locking tabs, but not many. I like the sculpt though. The paterials are a mix of soft and hard plastic. The paint looks half good, but it you panel line it, it looks quite nice. The super valkyrie parts fall off very easily, and the arms add-ons are impossible to attach (nothing to really hold on to the arm!). Doesn't have landing gears (except on super mode), and no stand. Overall, well worth the 6 or 8 U$S I paid for it on HLJ (it was on discount last year).

I don't think the Toynami one is too bad for the price plus if you have the yomato Monster, you've finally have some Veritechs that are in scale with it not to mention all the 1/100 scale figures/models like Gundams and stuff.

Those are good points. I'm just tired of getting shoddy products for high prices. Granted these prices are not nearly as bad as their predecesors, I could still save that dough to get larger and more intricate items. Still, Toynami has piqued my interest with this one.

disapointing. while it's "great" to get a domestic US Macross valk again, its a shame it comes at the price of other things we all want.

This will be a good addition to my revoltech collection since a think they are the same scale but if the plastic is bad and brittle.. arrrgghhh! but at the price of 20$ i might consider... :-)

Granted I hate the weird futuristic designs of current Transformers, but it does pose the question of why Hasbro can produce a transforming toy in the $20-$30 range of decent quality materials and Toynami cannot?

Granted I hate the weird futuristic designs of current Transformers, but it does pose the question of why Hasbro can produce a transforming toy in the $20-$30 range of decent quality materials and Toynami cannot? likely due to economies of scale hasbro is huge and can spread the cost of creating new molds as well as other manufacturing costs to a larger production run, re-using molds for multiple products. While toynami has to create new molds specifically for the 1/100 valk and will likely have no other products it can re-use those molds for, in addition they're likely smaller than hasbro.

I have the SDCC exclusive and it is far, far better than the Banpresto designed ones. My only major gripe is that one of the legs was a tad to loose at the knee joint and fell off once or twice, but it had to be heavily jared to do so.
