They didn't show very many when I was growing up; I've missed most of the classics. Starblazers/yamato is #1, but no robots.
1.)Robotech (Mospeada then Macross) 2.)Zoids 3.) Voltron(vehicle team for me!)
As a kid in the 3rd grade, I HATED Tranzor-Z. It wasn't as cool as robotech; now I collect Mazingers and have no Robotech toys! I guess I should have paid closer attention back then!

That makes me wonder: if "Tranzor-Z" and "Mazinger-Z" are the same anime? I've never seen Tranzor-Z, but I've watched some of Mazinger-Z.
I've a lotta catchin up to do on Mazinger-Z... But we'll leave that for another thread, where folks can share more knowledge and info on the Mazinger-Z series.

Tranzor-Z was the Americanized version of Mazinger Z. Episodes cut to fit US tv, any sort of racy (i.e. bawdy or overly violent) material cut/rewritten. Dialogue largely rewritten; I think Boss Borot was Bobo-bot.
It's embarassing how ignorant I am of the source material(anime/manga) of most of my robots. I know the toys and their history, but I've only seen a couple episodes of Maz Z(not Tranzor), Grandizer, and Getta RoboG(starvengers). If it wasn't for the Movie collection, I'd have never seen any Great Maz or original Getta Robo. I guess I need to hit wikipedia and youtube.

1)Getter Robo Armaggedon, the one with the professor being evil and has this big thing called Shin Dragon. 2)Shin Getter Robo or New Getter Robo, they keep changing the name, but the Getter in that one are the same as the ones in the Revoltech line. 3)Voltron/Go-lion, this one use to top the list until I recently rented the first season from Netflix. It wasn't this terrible when I was watching it as a kid but if I listen to that damn theme music again, but hey, kids can listen to the same songs over and over. I just find that Voltron theme music annoying now. Sometimes when you let your mind trick you into remembering how great things was, it's better.
I used to love watching Transformers until a couple of years back when they were showing them on the cartoon network. Man those were some boring cartoons, but had I not watch them again, in my mind, they still would have been great. The thing with these new Getter Robo cartoons, they are more dark and IMO are more entertaining.

I had toys for Gaiking, Golion, Great Mazinger, Macross, Getter Dragon, etc. when I was kid, but the only anime I actually was able to watch back then were Robotech, Voltron, Tranzor-Z , Star Blazers & Battle of the Planets. I really want to watch the original shows for some of these super robots that I grew up with but virtually know nothing about, but other than the sporadic episode found on youtube it's pretty tough. I went the HK bootleg route for Gatchaman (b4 the legit American release,) and was so horribly turned off by the mutilated subtitles, that I never want to do that again, so youtube, wikipedia, and whatever I learn here are my only sources for super robot history. Sorry to get off topic: 1. Robotech (Macross first, Mospeada a very close second, and then Southern Cross.) 2. Voltron (Lions first then vehicle, although I tried watching some of the lion episodes recently on Cartoon Network and the voice acting is terrible! Sven sucks. Hahaha.) 3. Please don't make me put Tranzor-Z here, but I just didn't have any other robot shows when I was a kid. Hahaha. (Oh wait, Transformers. I kept thinking Japanese cartoons. Transformers would be #2, and Voltron #3.)

zoidstar, you're right, Headmasters is a riot.
For us US fans, the different voices they used in the UK is worth the price of admission. No offense, but sometimes a British accent sounds girly here in the US.
Shantastic, I recently found a bootleg copy of the Tranzor Z series. I had to have it. I hated it as a kid (it didn't hold up to robotech, which was airing at the same time), but it's as close as I think I'll get to a US Mazinger Z set.
....Dr Demon, Devilene, Decapito....I missed you guys!

I hated it as a kid (it didn't hold up to robotech, which was airing at the same time), but it's as close as I think I'll get to a US Mazinger Z set. Same wavelength Cap. I watched Tranzor-Z back in the day basically cuz it was anime, and because I had the jumbo Shogun Warrior Great Mazinga, but these heavily edited episodes of Mazinger Z could not hold a candle to Robotech or Star Blazers (which were also edited, but to a much lesser extent.) This is not meant as a diss towards Mazinger Z, it's just that the Tranzor-Z version is just too butchered from the original. So, how does Tranzor hold up, Cap? How many episodes was it compared to the original Mazinger Z? I seem to remember it having very cheesy voice-acting, and some equally cheesy opening graphics. I also remember during the intro someone yelling, "Tranzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzor-ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZEEE!" Haha.
