I'd be very careful purchasing this version of Maz. It does seem that this is the real deal, but the photos can be deceiving. Also, when the seller states that they are not an expert on the item, it sends up a red flag. However, they do generally have good feedback.

Yeah, I've been kind of reading up on this piece for the last few weeks, trying to figure out if its real or not.

me too....I thought the reissue was in the 'etarnal heroes' series, in which case it would show 'etarnal heroes' on the box... The only official reissue I know of is the '99 Banpresto one, and this isn't that...
I know I first saw it on Saturday, with a $220 BIN, but the BIN option disappeared and it then had a few bids...
I'm always wary of when BINs come & go like this, but without seeing its footprint, I really couldn't tell.
It may have just been a screaming deal....

There were a few different reissues during the 70's, with the latest coming out in '79 I think. Then in 86 it came out through Etarnal Heroes, and again in 99 with Banpresto. Or that's what I gathered from the info on Chogokin.net

After reading up on the seller it seems he has a large selection of rare Japanese toys including vintage Takara's and Popy's, also they have an excellent feed back record (I went through every page of feedback) and they have no accusations of bootlegging shinanagans. Also, the seller is very reputable and it seems that he will work with customers with complaints about their orders.

I can add some insight here:
1st GA-01 (about 1974)- small box, hand painted head, fold down chest V and missiles underneath, no jet pack, and missile pins in the shoulders.
2nd GA-01- had a jumbo on the box, now with jet pack, with the arm missile pegs still in the shoulder.
3rd GA-01 had silver legs and the missile pins on the arms are now moved; closer to the hands. Jet scrambler is there. Box shows a jumbo & is the regular popy box size. I'm pretty sure the chest missiles were eliminated.
4th (I think) GA-01 gold legs. Also 1974 with the same setup as above.
5th 1979 GA was all gold plated. new sculpt with anniversary box in red and gray with the toy pictured. The chest missiles were back and bigger- visible on the front (holes showing).
6th 1984 "new sculpt" in regular colors and the "flying anime mazinga box"
7th GA-01 1986 had a "Eternal Heroes" box with a very dull cardboard box print style. The diecast sculpt is the new sculpt.
? ? ? version. -Flying anime box with new sculpt. There was a "New Old stock" find that was potentially a warehouse find. Others say the toy was pulled due to bad paint and was old sub-standard stock; maybe it was boxed fresh after the find. Others think that the toy was a near perfect bootleg. I have the toy and other than the slightly transluscent paint, I don't see flaws. Despite other reviews and inspections, I still say it could be legit......
7th GA-01 first version (was reissued by Banpresto '99) I felt that the red plastic was a bit more maroon than pictures I'd seen. Then the head was painted with machine percision. -Box has a new printing style; nearly the same from what I gather.

The bootlegs were $50 when they came out in 2000. I have one, MIB for the same $50 if anyone is interested. They really are pretty impressive copies.

There's another one on ebay right now. And there was another one (although apparently and earlier version) that just finished.
This sudden spike in GA01's for sale has me a little suspicious, so I think I'll be staying away. The sellers have all looked totally reputable, but I'm still wary.

Is the foil waist sticker a dead giveaway for bootleg? Cause the one I got for graduation has correct leg size on both legs, a blue scrander sticker, and the paper works (instructions and Popy registration/ ad) and styrofoam are yellowed and smell "old." The Popy logo on the bottom of the foot says 1979. Everything seems to be in order, but the shiny waist sticker.

There's one in Green Arrow Graffiti that has a shiny belt sticker, and that book predates the suspect versions.

Has anyone heard of a bootleg of the Banpresto 1999 reissue GA-01?

Just for some referrence here is my GA01 purchased new in 1978. From Ed's description it would be version three. Incidentally: there is no styrofoam inner box. The toy had only a piece of foam rubber wrapping to prevent scratches. JWM
