Got this toy today. Pretty cool, it has some die-cast bits and it's fully transformable. Mecha mode is pretty good (almost better than the other die-cast ZZ on certain aspects), but the G-Fortress mode isn't super sturdy. Still a nice piece. There's no date on the box, do you guys know what year it's from?

Do you have the 1/100 DX ZZ? If you do, I'd love to hear how the HCM 1/144 compares to it. If you don't, what are some more details about the comparison between the HCM and the more recent diecast 1/144? Thanks.

Never heard of the 1/100 DX version... do you have more details?
The 2 I have are 1/144 I believe (altjough the newer one is a bit taller). The older one is floppier and more fragile, but both toys basically achieve the same transformation. I like the way the hands transform better on the old one (bigger space). Also, the fingers (well, thumb + fingers) are articulated on the old one. The old one lacks detailing though, it looks cheaper, but it does have die-cast in the knees, the pelvis plates and the shoulders. The newer one is much better toy. More detailed, sturdier and heavier.

Thank you megatroptimus for the comparison and the pictures. I didn't realize that the old HCM featured that much diecast and was that much smaller than the 2003 release. I think the 1/100 DX version is a scaled up version of the HCM. I ended up passing on the HCM because I got the 1/100 version first. I'll have to dig out my old DX which I have stored away. I recall it lacking a lot of details like the HCM but still fully transforming/combining.

Do you know what year it's from? And if I want to buy one on Ebay, what should I be looking for exactly? I'm confused with all the different series.

The HCM is from around 1982, although some HCMs were re-issued in the 90s. I know the box was similar on the re-issues but how similar, I'm no sure.

The DX I believe is from the 80's like the original HCM and also produced by Bandai. The DX was re-released in the 90's in a special Musha Gundam format with additional pieces of samurai armor and weapons. I don't see the DX 1/100 ZZ Gundam show up much on eBay. I did get mine on eBay quite a few years ago. It looks basically like a much bigger HCM.

I'll need to pull it out and see if I feel like I could live without it. Hmm.

I would be interested in the newer version myself. How much do they go for anyway?
