I know a number of you collect the Kits, Figures, etc. but are any of you playing (or have you played) any of the Super Robot Taisen games? If so, which games, and what did you think?
.......
I've been fascinated with SRW for years, but being unable to really import the games on the PS2 (unwilling to mod) I missed out there for an awful long time. However, with Atlus localizing Original Generations for the GBA a few years ago, and the ability to play the games region-free on the DS with Super Robot Wars W & Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier (likewise the ability to play what will presumably be upcoming PS3 titles) the future looks a little brighter as far as the series goes. I've obtained all of these, and after my girlfriend purchased a Japanese PS2 (she's Japanese) I'm mulling over investing in some of the past titles to play on the system.
But before I go any further in that respect, I recently restarted SRW: Original Generation again and have been having an awful lot of fun navigating those battles. I could use a "skirmish" type level where I could battle and upgrade my units, and generally enjoy piloting these super robots for a greater length of time, but its a great srpg and I hope to start the second game in the next several weeks before moving on to the DS games.
Should you have anything to recommend where the series is concerned, by all means, please do!

I'm playing the PS2 SRW OGs right now. I actually had to start all over on OG1 because I didn't meet all the Battle Mastery requirements. I'm trying to get the "Shishio Blade" I guess it's nearly impossible to advance the next level without it.
EDIT: I forgot to mention....these games are HARD. At least for me they are. I love upgrading and what not, just a pain in the tail at times.

I've played almost all the way through OG1 for the GBA, and dabbled a little in 2 (but didn't want to go too far without beating 1). I really wish I could read Japanese, because I honestly tried to play the recent Super Robot Wars W, but couldn't get into it for a lack of understanding what was going on. As far as the OG games go, I've really enjoyed them. They're a decidedly different affair from what I'm used to with strategy RPGs, coming from games like "Fire Emblem" and the like where a death is permanent, I kept quitting and reloading missions in OG1 when my favorite character would die before I found out later that it just docked you some cash and brought them back for the next mission It's a real pity that Atlus can't bring over and localize more of these games in the U.S. because of all the licensing hullabaloo, because I enjoy them and would love to play more of them. Oh well. I still have Disgaea.

Played SRW OG for the PS2, but have not played SRW OG 2.5 or SRWOG Gaiden yet. The game is relatively easier because you can buy skills (SP Regen) that will let your pilot replenish their SP every turn.
Plus, once you get aussenseiter in SRW OG 2, max out his upgrade and put any item that'll increase speed, and he'll become a nightmare because the enemy can't hit him (don't forget to cast concentrate also)!

But I like the fact that death means something in the game and it adds to the overall sense of strategy in my mind. I still remember feeling like a punk after I beat FE8 and saw that a couple of units didn't have a "happily ever after story to tell" when instead I got a picture of their grave markers! Needless to say, the next time I played it everyone made it out alive. All that said, I was a little relieved when I found out that units weren't permanently gone when playing in OG1. Perhaps it just comes down to what I expect out of a particular series. You said it. Though I am much more and more tempted to track down those Japanese PS2 games now that I finally have the means to play them.

I'll keep that in mind! Curiously, anyone able to recommend the best imported PS2 SRW games to get? Perhaps one, two, or three of the games that have the greatest variety of mechs to play? Perhaps one that has an english translation online somewhere?

I dont have the time nowadays to play any srw games anymore but I got to say that SRW games revived the robot love in me <_<
