Madcats was doing a $50 off special on their new Soul Calibur TE sticks, so I have one of those, $110 shipped seemed like a good deal for what is generally regarded as a pretty high quality stick (and I have to say I'm super happy with it so far). I've been playing around with the various replacement art options since I don't care much for the stock art and wouldn't mind doing a custom job on it. I have the original Street Fighter IV version of that stick. Great controller indeed, but my old north-american hands just couldn't get used to its asian-style square gate. Good thing it's very easy to mod and changing it for an american-style round gate is a snap. Now I have no problem being an annoying hadoken-spamming jerk. ;D

I'm about four trophies away from a platinum on Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2, so I'm grinding my way through that. It kind of astounds me how Idea Factory managed to make a decent game after the first one was sooooooooo teeeeeeerrible.
Once that's done I need to keep chipping away at the RPG stockpile. Maybe I'll try to finish Resonance of Fate.

And I've been loving Mass Effect. I don't know why I didn't get around to this sooner. I mean, it's a sci-fi game, which is right up my primary interest. Plus it's an action rpg, which means I could dial down the action difficulty without feeling guilty (I admit, I suck at "twitchy" action). I have finished Mass Effect 3's story mode, but what I can't put down is the multiplayer, it's really fun even if it has the same missions.

Half Life. I can see how this inspired a lot of FPS, however I wish it was as deep in its story tellling as Half Life 2. From what I ready the expansions to half life go more into the story.

Damn! I thought I had a robust backlog. Heheh. Right now I'm floating back and forth between the 2 major consoles. For my STG/Shmup fix I've been playing Dodonpachi Resurrection, Akai Katana Shin and Strainia for the 360. Just finished up the Zeon and Feddy campaigns Gundam Battlefield Record UC 0081 for the PS3 in preparation for Gundam Battle Operation later this week. Every now and then I throw in UMvC3 if I wanna get "bodied". School has been usually pretty busy during the week, so I've been stuck to playing at nights before bed or the weekends primarily. There is a cool demo for Robotics;Note on PSN JP. Mostly a visual novel, but still intreguing, as you play the role of a kid trying to build a real giant robot.

Every now and then I throw in UMvC3 if I wanna get "bodied". Blazblue Continuum Shift has been my go-to for scratching that particular itch. Sometimes I even win! (but usually not)

I was feeling kind of crappy today so I ended up taking the day off work and playing the new game "Spec Ops: the Line" today. And I do mean ALL of it.
I'm divided on my thoughts on this game. Well, no, I'll just say, outright, that I love it. It was a fantastic game in my mind. Visually both janky (technically) as well as beautiful (artisitcally), it takes the familiar Modern Warfare formula of pull-left-trigger-to-iron-sight-and-shoot-bad-guy shooters as well as the Gears of war third person cover systems and appropriates them for its own purposes - crafting a story that is jarring - disturbing even - and in the end, utterly metatextual in its content. There is seriously a point towards the end of the game where the game itself will start taunting the player, not the character, for the decisions you have made, within the context of the familiar post-death-loading-screen-pro-tip. You get angry at it. I seriously yelled at my computer a few times "SHUT UP!" during the process. It's a cycle, because it's the end of the game, you are dying more, so you're seeing the screens more, and the screens are getting more and more derisive of the actions you've taken to get to the point you're at. It's kind of brilliant.
I won't dwell on it too much more other than say that the ending choices the game provides are amazing in how absolutely open and brutally terrible they are.
The whole point of the game is that while you are in a video game situation where obviously you are moving forward at the pace demanded by the creators, you are the one opting to do the things that you do, and in a real world situation your actions aren't as glamorous as a more heroic game like Modern Warfare or Gears of War would depict.
Bad people do bad things, sure. But sometimes good people do worse things, for the best of reasons. "We were trying to help" is a phrase that will haunt you at the end of the game. At least, it did me. Considering I'm a cold hearted sonofab*tch who played the "No Russian" mission in MW2 straight and mowed down my fair share of NPCs, this game made me supremely uncomfortable with the situations that were presented.
Even if it's only a rental (the game is definitely quite short, as I said, I played the entirety of the game today), I'd recommend people with an interest in a more cerebral story for their modern shooter to check it out.
Those with a squeamish stomach who prefer their tales a little more cut and dry, a tad more black and white? Stay away. You'll probably hate what this game puts you through.

Beat Resistance 3. The game was better than the previous entires. I had a few gripes, but the story telling was much better. From an cinematic standpoint there were a few timing issues that reduced the stories impact some. If I was to direct it, I would had extended a few things longer to give a smoother transition in story telling as well as more impact. The ending being one of these things. It was too brief. It took 8hrs to beat, but it felt much longer. I guess cause game play and story was intense. A few unexpected messed up things happened. The multiplayer is good, but it feels like a mashup of R2, Halo Reach, and MW2. Once again the controls changed. I miss the CoOp of R2. That was one of the best features of an online game i played. I also miss the guns of R2. I wish they pulled those into multiplayer.
I am also playing their online Global war game. It unlocks stuff in the game, plus its sort of fun.

I got "Ys Origin" and "Ys: The Oath in Felghana" (classic top-view remake of the side-view Ys III) for a song during this year's Steam Summer Sale. I started a game of Origin yesterday and so far it's really fun. I've wanted to play a Ys game ever since I read a review of Ys III in Nintendo Power as a kid. Now I feel like playing through the whole series. PS: The Oath in Felghana is $5.09 (66% off) again on Steam today. Of course, if you want nothing but 2012 AAA-class visuals, you'll be disappointed : this is a 2005 game. But it looks good anyway and it doesn't take a killer hi-end machine to run it at 60 frames per second with maxed out settings at high resolution. I don't know how high it goes without some tinkering, but it does support my monitor's native 2560 x 1440 resolution straight out of the box. If you're a Zelda fan or liked Secret of Mana, you may want to give it a try. For 5 bucks, you can't really go wrong.
