Any of you fans of Turn Based strategy games? Some of the better ones are Final Fantasy Tactics and X-Com. The creators of X-Com also dig a GBA strategy game called Rebel Star that is decent for being a stripped version of X-Com. I just installed Virtual PC on my Mac so I can run my old Dos XCom game. Its worth checking out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-COMwww.xcomufo.com/Any other Turn based strategy games anyone wants to suggest?

Yeah, Final Fantasy Tactics... probably best FF game in the series (IMHO), and Front Mission III too.

That looks interesting. If I get a PS3, I will check that out. If you like FFT then check out Saiyuki: Journey West on PS1. Same concept but instead of Job classes you are a Were-Beast. www.gamespot.com/ps/rpg/saiyuki/index.htmlThere are a few FFT games to pop up on DS and a few copies of it as well that are decent. Another good turn based game is Advance Wars. I played part 2 on DS. I have part 3 but have not tried it yet.

I lived and breathed X-Com back in the day. I still enjoy the Nippon Ichi strategy games (Disgaea 1+2, Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle Tactics), and I liked FF:Tactic Advance when I was playing GBA games. Haven't had a chance to pick up FF:TA2 yet. I've also really enjoyed the SRW:OG games.

I picked up Makai Kingdom but have not really played it yet. Disgaea looks like a new twist on FFT.

the NIS games (Disgaea, etc..) really encourage power leveling and "breaking" the game by overbuffing your characters. It's kinda fun getting to the last boss in a game and just wiping him out in a single combo attack

The other way around happened to me in Disgaea 2, did not level up much thinking I can finish the story fast, turned out I was on the receiving end of the sub boss' combos

Glad to see there are still some X-Com fans around; I finally completed Terror from the Deep last month after 10 years of getting anhiliated by lobster men. It's depth and atmosphere have still yet to be bettered. Some of my favorites: Battle Isle: Incubation - PC Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - SNES / PS1 (makers of FFT... much better imo ) Warsong - Megadrive / Genesis Shining Force CD - Sega CD Vandal Hearts - PS1 Heroes of Might and Magic III - PC I love these kind of games...why does anyone still play chess!?

10 years after it was released, I still play heroes of might and magic 3 in my laptop whenever I am on a business trip. ;D ;D ;D
Heard so much about X-Com but I always more into dragon and sword ; hence my hesitation

I have been wasting the past few days playing x-com. It is far too addictive and it punishes you for doing too well. My favorite is Terror from the deep and I have the research part down, so the more stuff I get the tougher the enemies they send after me.

Time spent playing X-Com is never time wasted. Unless you're playing X-Com interceptor or X-Com enforcer.
I'm a traditional X-com kinda guy. Never got that much into terror from the deep.
Man, I have some fond memories of X-Com though. The first time I used a blaster launcher... the first time an alien used a blaster launcher on ME, as soon as I stepped out of the landing craft (entire squad dead... um.... thank goodness for savegames). Good times...

I am not sure if this is in the 1st x-com but I love having mind control over the aliens in TFD and having them kill each other. I also love being afraid to look around a corner cause I might not have enough time units to kill what ever is hiding around the corner. Its the only turn based game I ever played that keeps me on edge.
I do get angry when I loose someone with a high shooting accuracy.
BTW, I found an online patch for xcom. I am not sure if it works though, but it allows you to play against someone online. I also found that x-com started as a turn based email game, like email chess.

Yeah, MC was a really fun thing to play with in the original Xcom. And that feeling of dread... oh, I know it oh so well. No matter how much you upgraded your technology, there was always this feeling of "oh god, there could be anything out there". Seeing a swarm of Chryssalids rushing your best guys while they're out of action points is just a soulcrushing feeling.

I hunted forever for information on a new game from this team or even a direct copy. There had been other games but none of them really lived up the the first two. Then I found Rebelstar and it was good enough.
If I ever get a chance at making a turn based strategy game I would have to say that x-com will be a strong influence.

I just finished an intense mission on X-Com. I had located and enemy base and decided to go attack it. The base has two parts. A full mission on the surface then when you kill everyone, you have another full mission under ground. Each mission has a large amount of levels and enemies. I really did not think my troops were ready for it, they are still sort of green, but we had to give it a shot or our funding would go down at the end of the month due to increased alien activity. We cleared the top section, with no casualties on our team. We start the second level under ground and some tasloth soldiers were waiting for us and my team is divided. I take out the troops and send my automated tank down further to scout for enemies before sending my troops. All is clear and I leave my tank at the bottom to see any activity after my turn is up. I send my troops down one level about the tank to reserve their Time Units before we dive in for the attack. After my turn a teclanaught comes into the room my tank is in. I figure there is no worry, they are weak and only a danger to living organisms. He teaches me different. One strike and he destroys my tanks. My jaw drops. It take 4 or 5 shots from a sonic cannon to take out a tank, and this thing does it in one hit. I send my team of five in from above to take out the teclanaught with success. We make out way to the center of the stage. Two teams moving from opposite locations. Team one gets to the center first. I get each team member to a corner behind a wall to reserve their time units so they can all strike at once and support each other. As we turn into the room we find there are seven teclanaughts. I have a team of five. The teclanaughts take about two direct hits from a sonic rifle or cannon to die. They fly so I can not use a grenade and they are spread out in a large room in cubbies in the corners. I manage to take the first few out. One comes out from an unexpected place and attacks a new recruit. He knew what he was in for when he joined. When the teclanaught bites a troop it turns them into a zombie that will attack the other troops. There is no cure other than execution. I regretted it but we had to put him down. First we take out the teclanaught since it does more damage than the infected troop can, then with the last action of the turn we takeout the soldier. He falls and from his corpse another teclanaught rises. I forgot they reproduce with the host to make another. During its turn it move right at another troop. I was worried this would be an epidemic and it would take out my whole team. He gets right at my next soldier and stops. He must have run out of TUs. We take him out, and manage to get the rest of the teclanaughts in the room. It was an intense battle of wits and luck. The rest of the mission was cake. we had the enemy soldiers cornered and all they would do it panic and waste their time units and we picked them off one by one in teams of two.
Now that was a good mission.

Teclanaughts must be the TFtD equivalent of Cryssalids in UFO Defense. Those things are the WORST. Fast moving, infectious, and yeah, they wipe out tanks like they don't even matter. Ugh.
I used to have nightmares about them, when I was playing.
