I posted the same question on ToyboxDX as well, but figured it wouldn't hurt to spread a wider net. Anyway, I've recently begun collecting the various Popy GA-series Go Nagai characters. In my inexperience, I had thought that these earliest of gokins would be packaged in styroforam trays the way Popy's later offerings were. But instead I've only ever seen the Mazingas and Gettas swaddled in a soft foam "wrapper." Is this standard for these earliest Popy Gokins

I believe Popy made variations to the packaging of their toys depending on where it will be sold. Some toys were released with a styro tray version and another version using the soft foam.
I heard they used the packaging variations especially when they were selling the toys inside trains in Japan.

I've always see Gaiking and Reideen (so-called "DX" toys I believe) in trays since they have more add-on pieces and accessories...But the main Go Nagai robots I always see wrapped in foam. When I received my first 2, I thought the seller was pulling a fast one haha!

I always thought that the earlier releases had foam, but they later switched to styrofoam to better protect and hold still the toys and their accessories. But I could be wrong.

Which reminds me...I've had several Daimos ST GA-84 before, I used to have one with the soft styro foam MIB, and the rest in the usual styro tray. I don't have it anymore, since I sold it a long time ago.

The earliest releases of '74,'75 pretty well always had the foam rubber swaddling.
Then the DX sets like Robocon and Grandizer and GA-49 (Groundzero's stout round buddy) introduced the white styrafoam (1976) . -Also Gaiking and Daikumaryu. Many other "ST" sized characters still used foam rubber. All the Meikasu series toys used foam rubber.
The toy runs from 1978 on almost undoubtedly had a styrafoam tray version. I've found that many of the toys also used Foam rubber in these years, but just for train station/vending machines. You will usually see a fold in the box for these vending machine/foam rubber versions. I feel that much of the foam was added by collectors since many, like kingboy's, didn't get any padding inside the baggies.
-As a side note, much of the foam rubber ages to be a slight yellow. I've seen a few examples where it was air tight and remined relatively white. Aftermarket foam tends to be a stark bleachey white with bigger air pockets.
