I know, at least for myself, that the hardest part of any custom isn't necessarily starting it, or planning it, or even the work entailed, it's just making sure I don't lose track and forget to finish it. So hopefully for the benefit of us all who don't have projects that we feel need dedicated threads, have little undertakings that we'd like to show off, those who are hoping for some prodding from our peers to get off our asses and finish the job, or for those of us who just are hoping to talk shop with customizes and painters, I thought maybe a thread where we post photos and talk about our unfinished products as a whole might be in order I'll start off: I've had two Kotobukiya 1/144 Gespensts awaiting repainting since before winter started. Since the weather has gotten nice, I've only managed one pair of shoulders though on the easier repaint; tsk! It was my first attempt at using masking tape to make Gundam-fix style striping, and ... well, it didn't work so well. Oh well! Anyone else got an in-progress project they'd like to show or discuss, be it custom, scratchbuild, or sketch? Comments? Suggestions? I'm just throwing this out here to amuse myself, but hopefully I wont end up just talking to myself ;D

I tried to repaint a Transformers movie Cliff jumper but stopped working on it long ago, maybe I'll return to it in the upcoming break!

Good idea! I know I have several projects that are still "in-progress" from 5 years ago! Craziness! Here's a couple of recent efforts that are starting to actually take shape. For Koto's Modeling Support Goods Trailer, I'm trying out a new weathering technique in order to achieve a rusted/weathered effect. Basically it's involves using kosher and table salt as a mask and then airbrushing your top colors. I'll explain more on this a bit later perhaps. It's pretty much done- decals and washes applied. Just a couple details left. YAY!

Does the salt just function as a mask and is brushed off afterwards or does it stay on, forming a "lumpy" texture? Doing convincing rust has always been tricky for me (it always ends up looking more like mud streaks), so I'd love to hear/see more about this technique.

Actually, that may be a good sign, quinjester ! That can only mean that there is plenty of board activity. Enough so to serve as a distraction to one's own threads! Anyways, yeah, that salt technique thing. You're absolutely right. It is a form of masking. I learned it from a disgustingly talented scale modeler named Luca Zampriolo AKA ZLuca from the Fichtenfoo boards. Basically you paint the model parts your desired rust/primer color and then spray Future Floor Acrylic (FFA) to seal the rust coat color. Then use hairspray as a light adhesive for applying different grades of salt around the edges of the model (you need to be swift about this). After your salt is on the piece, spray your top color(s). After your colors are applied, take the piece, dip it in water and use a soft bristle brush to lightly brush off the pieces of salt. Ideally this will give the appearance of areas of worn, rusted spots. This was sort of a practice run. I'm pleased with the results, although it did take a few tries on different pieces to achieve the desired effects. Next I'll be trying the technique on my VP 1/144 Messala kit. Surprisingly enough, I'm actually working on a clean version of the HGUC Zeta Gundam. I'm only slightly worried, as this is my first "clean" model. No weathering, No shading. Here's some progress on that!

nice thread and nice builds! I am working on my yamato red shoulder ver.2 for a while now but it's far from finished. I'm also building a diorama and i work on a detachable shield for the AT. I "stole" the design for the shield from a beautifull model build by fichtenfoo.check it out! fichtenfoo.net/blog/tag/desert-scopedog/he also shows that salt painting technique and how to do it.looks totally awesome! i also did some painting to my 1/48 stealth VF-1J which is only finished on the displayed side. and this 1/6 Sylia is waiting to get finished.she's the first model i have ever build.i purchased her cheap on ebay, together with the other Knight Sabers members.they were half build and terribbly painted. I had to clean her up and disassemble her...I think i go on the priss figure next. I'm sure there's some grammatical nonsense in my post. please just ignore it.

VERY cool Scopedog, fatcap! The Yamato's really lend themselves to repainting (hell, they practically demand it...), don't they? I have one myself that, while it's not really "finished", I don't think I'm going to work on anymore. It was a fun project to work on, though. Your BBC crisis figure looks good! Can't wait to see the others! Are they poseable or fixed?

thank you kingboy! thank you quinjester, and yeah, you could say they are begging for some paint!i discovered so much detail on the scopedog i had never seen before! it's really worth painting and very much fun!yours looks great too! you could leave it like it is or have some more fun with it, i really like the rusted leg armor.the pose rocks too! I did some progress on the legs last night... the BGC figures have movable shoulders, hips, knees, head and on Sylia the wings on the back fold in, but there is not really more than one cool pose possible. it looks better on the picture than in real.I used the wrong clear varnish and she is sticky.i learned a lot on the progress and i hope the Priss figure will get better. i thought about giving Priss balljoints for better poses.

Great Scopies, fellas! I need to get to cracking on mine at some point! Can't wait. So, I recently started working on my 1/72 Impulse 7 Personal Trooper. Again. Hopefully I'll finish up soon.

Very cool figure, that one. I built one ages ago, though I was lazy and didn't paint him.
Be careful with all the various sharp edges on him, he's VERY easy to break and or cut yourself on him, eheh.

thanks mojacko, i painted and weathered the FAST packs, Cockpit and Missile Pod only.I hadn't the guts to do anything on the Valk itself. And the Sylia really looks better on the Photo than in real.I don't even have her displayed anymore. The Scopedog is almost done, but unfortunatly, i don't find the time to get him done.

It's really too bad that they (Wave) didn't do more with the G-Breaker series. Lot's of potential. That said, the kit is very old and now OOP. I got mine years ago from HS1999. I was able to find this auction on Rinkya (YJA) for one that's at 2,500 yen. www.rinkya.com/twview.pl?URL=http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r53941180I'm sure these pop up on YJA all the time, but the major online hobby shops most likely won't have 'em . I am in the painting process right now. I'll be giving it a metallic candy coat of clear blue over chrome. Just for giggles. ;D

Thanks recca, never did YJA before though. But that is one awesome looking mecha and that is a pretty good price....(or is it?) So is it about the same size as Amored core kits?
Cant wait to see your finished product!

Hah, MMJ I might have my old one sitting somewhere at home, I could probably check and see if it's still knocking around if you want a pre-built one, heh.
