You wouldn't happen to know what process your friend used to get that finish do you? It doesn't look like it was ectroplated, if that was the case I don't think it would have the missed spots or rough surface, but it's a check of a lot nicer looking than gold leaf an most paint.
Using Ultra Magnus might have been a lucky break, the white plastic doesn't contrast with the gold plate as much as red and blue would have.

Unfortunately... it wasnt "perfect". It was our 1st time in trying out chroming an MP. But we were already used to chroming Zoids thus we're now trying it out on TFs and other toylines... -Grimm
