From the news that I read in Macross World, the Max & Milia VF-1J is safe from the shoulder predicaments. There's a limited sale of Yamato 1/60 VF-1s, and I want to get a VF-1S DYRL Max. I read that this version is pretty safe from breakage. www.hlj.com/hljlist2/?Maker1=YMT&MacroType=Toy&GenreCode=Sci&Dis=2Unfortunately, the stand alone VF-1J on sale is the cannon fodder one.

Unfortunately, the stand alone VF-1J on sale is the cannon fodder one. that is very unfortunate. Guess that means I'll have to wait till Yamato to fix the issue before getting the GBP......well either that or finally getting a VF-1S and putting the armor on that instead.

I believe the difference between the bad shoulders and the good shoulders is on the type of pin that the factory installed on the product.
On valks with bad shoulders, "knurled" pins are used, which are believed to cause stress to the thin plastic joint piece, that gradually lead to cracks and breakages (sometimes, even out of the box).
The good shoulders use smooth pins, and so far, according to MW, there are no reported shoulder breakage to valks using smooth pins.
There are a lot of pictures in MW, unfortunately you have to register to view them.

For the sake of the potential buyers, I'm going to list the valks type and colors that has been confirmed by MW crowds to have smooth shoulder joint pins which have not shown signs of stress or breakage (does not mean that they won't in the future, tho...):
VF-1A Cannon Fodder DYRL VF-1A Kakizaki DYRL VF-1S Max DYRL VF-1S Hikaru Plus DYRL VF-1S Roy Plus Low Vis. VF-1S Roy VE-1 VF-1A TV Max VF-1J Hikaru Weathered VF-1D (I presume that would include the Virgin Road version)
...Which means that possibly, every other versions have some sort of shoulder problems.
Well, call me crazy, but I'm going to push my luck and order the DYRL VF-1S Max from HLJ's sale... I hope I don't get a lemon.
EDIT: Rats! The DYRL VF-1S Max is not on sale anymore! Went with VF-1A Max TV version instead...

I checked my DYRL VF-1A Hikaru with fast pack and both shoulders are fine with no stress mark. I think those are smooth pins that are in there, but not sure. I wonder if it's because it's a later release batch or if it's a case by case thing.
Thanks for compiling the list Niko.

I checked my valks and only the VF1S roy w/fast pack has the cracked shoulder . I got it months ago when it was 1st released .
I checked the vt1 ve1 vf1d and Vf1j mass pro and think they all have the smooth pin only b/c none them have any damage.

Ok I can not tell if mine are good or bad. The pin looks smooth, but prior to breaking can you really confirm that? Also there seems to be some stress marks on one side, but it could just be the weathering paint application. Any tips on how to confirm the join used?
