the Knurled pin has "teeth" really its ridges on one end of the pin that slides into the shoulder /hinge the problem is that this grinds the inside of the shoulder / joint and the shoulder cracks and then breaks . this was very common on the 1st vf 1s fokker and the was found on a bunch of other 1/60 v 2 Valks . Graham of MW is trying to resolve this . How ? I dont know From what i've seen some solutions include grinding down the end of the pin and making it smooth and gluing the cracked part with - I guess super glue . Overdrive is offering replacement parts but the customer service and wait time are a big issue. I found both shoulders cracked on my vf1s fokker I'm gonna fix it myself . I need to check the hobby store . I'm trying to come up with a stonger solution than sanding and glue edit: checked my unpainted version - pushed the pin out and it is a smooth pin no ridges

could it be the plastic material that yamato used and not the pin issue??? even if you put super glue or other adhesive on it ...there will always be some stress / force on it....if the pin is made up of metal then by right the plasitc holding it should stand the stress when someone transforms it....i dont know if you can use epoxy sculpt after gluing it ....just to add more support on the plastic beside the normal super glue..... its just my opinion guys as i still dont own the recent ver 2 valks.....now im having 2nd thougts on getting one.....arrrrrrrrrghhhh....perhaps the new yamato model kit

Considering some people got cracked and broken hinges right out of the box, this seems likely. I don't think there have been any reports yet of broken hinges with the smooth pins.

I think the pin issue has to do with the installation of it at the factory. I think with the older pins, too much force was used and the "teeth" in the pins would crack the plastic. Where as the smooth pins could use the same force and thus not needing to change production processes, would not cause the cracking. But I find it immensely entertaining that fans have been complaining about this for years, but only now that Graham from Macrossworld got burned that your actually seeing something done, still I doubt Yamato will change much if anything at all. Fans are STILL buying their products no matter what pins they use, how many broken shoulders, or how many re-paints. I have a cracked shoulder on my VF-1S Strike Roy but I understand that it was the very first Valk released, but still Yamato should have changed it immediately after and not let it drag out. Say what you will about Bandai's Macross Frontier products but I guarantee Bandai wouldn't have let this whole pin issue go on for this long.

I swore off the V2 after getting the Roy Strike when it first came out, which was the one most notorious for broken shoulders. Once Yamato started using smooth pins, I felt safe enough to buy one again and picked up the VF-1A TV Max which I was quite happy with. So far the ones with smooth pins seem to be fine so I'm not going to worry much, although it is cause for concern that Yamato is still using the knurled pins on some newer ones like the VT-1, or straight up using old stock like the 1J. Selling the old problematic 1J bundled with the GBP armor is downright dirty.

I'm always afraid to put in my own comments about this topic because of my ownership experiences and my firm belief in superstition and irony, but I do agree that repackaging a known problematic design is awfully shifty.
On the other hand, I can sort of commiserate with them as a company, because there's nothing quite so terrible as overstock for a toy company; not only does it become more unsellable as time progresses and other, more desirable toys enter the market, but you're paying taxes on the held stock and every piece counts as a negative count against any profits you make...
So I guess, as a consumer, I have to cry foul, but as a fellow manufactuer, I have to sort of admit that I'm envious they can pull a stunt like this but have a following dedicated enough to let them pull it off. The Macross fandom truly is an amazing thing.
Returning to topic; If the unpainted VF were a light grey I might pick one up, but for me the bone white is none too appealing - for one thing, they don't tend to stay that way (rewinding again - apparently some of the overstock VF-1J's are coming out of the packaging not only with broken shoulders, but with yellowing as well. Good times!), and a more dull color would be appropriate for a "real world" style paint scheme. I suppose I could paint the whole thing, but then there's issues with scraping and messed up tolerances... blah.
